New Orleans should be counting their blessing this ain't coming ashore on them, the tidal surges on this storm are tremendous and surely would have done more damage.
Lets hope all will be safe in Galveston and the surrounding areas, looks NASTY!

I just got done looking at the photo slideshow Yahoo has....man, N.O. is already under water from the rising tides.

Texas looks like a war broke out along the coast. Some homes are burning and the water is rising fast.

The peeps who left are the smart ones. You can't stop a storm like that.

I'll be saying a prayer or two that the people in harms way make it through OK and that there is minimal damage.  :peace

Apparently Galveston didn't issue a total evac order for the city until today...now helicopters are scrambling to rescue people.  On the plus side, if they're using the same chopper pilots that they did in Katrina, one of my best buds trained most of those guys and they are as good as you can get. :good

There is a freighter with 22 crewman aboard that has broken down in the gulf, 50 miles from Galveston,  directly in the storm's path.  Coast Guard has aborted their rescue attempt.  Air Force was trying as well....but it sounds like the crew is on their own now, drifting.  Can you say Edmund Fitzgerald? :(   God Bless the crew...and their families, and those trying to save them. :(  :(  :banghead

I worry about my Texas friends...I hope they all will be safe.   :(

So far most of my friends have found a way to check in.  They have a lot of wind damage and no power, but they're all okay.  :good  One lives off Galveston Bay, not sure if she'll have a home to go back to, but she was able to evac and get her important stuff out.

Along with being topless, HOOTERS is also bottomless and sideless...it was obliterated.  They might be able to turn it into HOOTERS toothpicks, that appears to be all that is left.

20 miles north of Galveston.  House and boats came through without a scratch.  I have many friends on the Island who were not so lucky.  I am planning an excursion to ferry a friend to his house on the west end of the island in a few days.  Jet boats don't need much water.
