Plea deal reached in murder of Havasu man
By DIANA PARKER Friday, December 12, 2008 10:32 PM MST
The man accused in the October 2007 stabbing death of a 37-year-old Lake Havasu City man has accepted a plea agreement that would require him to serve at least 25 years in prison.
Jeremy Huss, of the Mohave County Attorney’s Office, said Bryan Macbean, 32, pled guilty to first-degree murder Friday. He was accused of killing Todd Chapman early in the morning of Oct. 10, 2007, at Chapman’s home in the 1700 block of South Palo Verde Boulevard.
“It’s a good result in this case, because we had some evidence of premeditation, which is why we charged (Macbean) with first-degree murder, but it’s another thing convincing a jury of that,†Huss said. “This was an ugly case, and to get a first-degree murder plea and not put the victim’s family through a trial was something we took into account,†he said.
Lake Havasu City police were originally called to the scene of the murder by reports that Macbean was running around the neighborhood banging on doors, throwing rocks and damaging property. According to a police report, officers found Macbean “covered in blood, standing in the middle of the street, screaming obscenities.â€
Officers came upon the body of Chapman as they were checking the neighborhood for more evidence of damage Macbean might have caused. According to a report by the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office, Chapman suffered multiple stab wounds to the head and neck.
Chapman, who was single and didn’t have any children, was a 21-year employee of Campbell Boats. In December 2007, Campbell Boats owner Bob Whelan told Today’s News-Herald that Chapman started at the company while he was a student at Lake Havasu High School. He had worked his way up to the position of parts manager by the time he was killed.
“He was a responsible kid. I never felt any hesitation to hand him the keys to my cars, my boats — whatever,†said Whelan, who passed away Sept. 22. “He had a photographic memory... We have 20,000 parts in our system, and he knew 10,000 of them.â€
Chapman had reportedly known Macbean, whose residence was listed as Desert Hills, for about six years at the time of the murder.
A condition of Friday’s plea agreement is that Macbean would serve life in prison, which means he would be eligible for parole after 25 calendar years, Huss said.
“At that point, he’s only eligible for parole — that doesn’t mean he’ll get out. He could be in prison for the rest of his life,†Huss said.
Macbean’s formal sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 31 at 1:30 p.m. in the court of Mohave County Superior Court Judge Robert Moon.
