County OKs Desert Hills condo project
By DAVID BELL Monday, January 12, 2009 11:07 PM MST
KINGMAN — The change of one member of the Mohave County Board of Supervisors was enough to secure approval for a timeshare/condominium development in Desert Hills.
The board voted unanimously Monday to reconsider and approve rezoning for the Bella Lago development on London Bridge Road, to be located on the KOA Campgrounds.
In November, the board voted 2-to-1 to approve the zoning, with former supervisor Pete Byers opposed. But county staff lost and failed to take into account the total amount of written local opposition to the project, forcing the board to reconsider the application.
“The majority of people I‘ve spoken to are not opposed to the development. They are opposed to the scale of the development,†said resident John Hays.
The concern of those in opposition is the building heights proposed by the developer. Bella Lago is proposed as four buildings with the tallest at 65 feet in height.
Residents state not only will the taller buildings eliminate views of Lake Havasu and the Colorado River; it could have a negative impact on traffic, fire safety — currently Desert Hills Fire Department has no apparatus that could access a building that tall — and water.
“I’m for improving the property. I have some reservations about the plan however,†said resident Dee Moscou.
The board offered no discussion for its unanimous affirmation of the project, except for Dist. 3 Supervisor Buster Johnson’s explanation that proof of water adequacy for fire fighting must be in place prior to the development moving forward.
The zoning now changes from Commercial-Recreation and General Commercial to Special Development/Commercial, which allows for the taller building height.
"Damn you sure know how to fock things up."-GFR
