Ok here's the game plan as of right now, i have talk to C.E. about this a little but I think I can confirm it now but it is not a done deal yet. My 16 year old son is going out to hollywood, ca for a week or two and I'm planing a road trip out there with my 17 year old son to pick him up and then head back BUT we will be on a two vacation, SO this will be in july, Yes I know the hottest time of the year, Not sure if I'm dragging my trailer with me or not But most likely I will, My 17 year old has not be out there since he was 5 he is the one I'm having a hard time with this moving thing and I think he is just one of those type that do not want to think outside the box and need to show him a good time, He has not been outside ohio very much, We will spend a few days in the L.A. area and then move up to vegas for a few days and stay at my aunts place and then down to havi and over to phx with a stop at the grand canyon somewhere and sedona and then start heading back. What I want is a litlle help with Idea's on where to take him and show him some of the good things to do out there, YES I know about a few place but I need a refresh, sorry for such a long post.

Oh about my 17 year old, I think he is just scared to go out into the real world, He has told me many time that he does not like to be alone and he will be going to FL. for a week in june to a space camp so I hope this will help him and show him there is more to do than just ohio, Now my 16 year old love's to go all over place and has been to az and L.A. many times with me and love's it and even said he would move right now and just make new friend's there or where ever, he love's the desert.

There is a carousel restaraunt Chinese in Chinatown.  It is the coolest place to eat Chinese.  Not sure the exact name, something to do with carousels, though.  Carousel because you put all the entrees on a big lazy susan on the table.  Go about lunchtime midweek. Also, the LA County Museum always as incredible exhibits and the LaBrea Tarpits are right across the street.  Santa Monica Pier. Any of the missions.  Santa Barbara has one, San Juan Capristrano and San Luis Rey in Oceanside is the most authentic, IMO.  Oh, Venice Beach for all the weirdos is cool also, but dirty.

Good possibility, especially during the week. Seems like Action was the best to get jets from but they just changed hands so who knows right now.

Sounds like you're doing a bit of hop-scotching around  :stupid

Why not line up all your ducks and knock 'em down one by one? You'll save gas too.

If you take the high road (70) you can swing through Denver, down through Utah and into Vegas......then swing by the Calico Ghost Town on your way into L.A. You'll have some nice scenery and see the north edge of the canyon. Maybe stop by Mead?

OR, take the Low road (40) and hit Sedona and Havi on the way into L.A. and Vegas on the way home?

Don't know what your 17yr likes (nitelife, outdoors, boating, sports ???) Just throwing out some ideas.

Calico is a popular ghost town on the way to vegas. Toursity, but we liked it back in '02.

http://s32.photobucket.com/albums....20Vegas

http://www.calicotown.com/

Also in that set of pictures is my son doing some indoor skydiving in vegas. Might try that.

http://www.vegasindoorskydiving.com/
Don't know if this is the same place or not, just googled it.

If he likes 4x'ng, and you have time, Big Bear area can be fun. And there are some trails with old gold rush history.

If the ocean would be an adventure, a day trip to Catalina would be an idea while in Los Angeles.

I agree with MMSP
"Santa Monica Pier. San Juan Capristrano. Venice Beach."
If you hit Capistrano and he likes sport bikes, a nice drive up Ortega hwy is a popular road racing area. And there is a roadhouse at the top where the bikers hang out.

Of course there's Mullholland and the Rock Store in the LA area as well.

Wow; where to begin.....First off, just a little word on your son. Don't fret it about him not wanting to move. He's comfortable in his life and friends and simply apprehensive about changing all of that. But once it's happened and he realizes that he's gonna make new friends AS WELL as get to keep his old ones, he'll be OK.

Now, about this trip to the left coast....You say he's going to "Space Camp"? Is he into the "NASA" stuff or did he get this trip as a gift and goin' just because? If he's into it, get online and go to www.jpl.nasa.gov/pso/pt.cfm and see if you can reserve a tour. Thta's the tour page for the Jet Propulsion Lab  in Pasadena. They handle practically every "long-term" mission for NASA. But you knew that; didn't you?

If he's into "cultures" (not culture), definitely hit the beachfront at Venice. Can you say; "White Men Can't Jump"? I knew that you could. You also need to hit the surf. Find a shop that rents out surfboards and gives lessons. Think he'd get a kick outta that unless he's easily frustrated. Not as easy as some make it look!

Then there's always the theme parks; Disneyland, Knott's (my personal fav), Six Flags (thrills), Universal Studioes (go online and check for concerts at their amphitheatre; if you go here, take the "backlot tour; fun and informative.

Take him to Hollywood and take in a movie at Graumann's. Always a bunch of "Hollywood flakes" out front willin' to get a pic w/ya (@ a cost, but can be fun) and the "prints" in the walk are cool.  Who knows; he may fit right into somebody's "shoes".

There's also Griffith Park Observatory (just above Hollywood). They've changed it since the last time I went and you need reservations now. They used to have a summer program in the planetarium with a laserium show of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" that absolutely knocked your sox off! Don't know if they're still doin' that though.

As far as the boat rentals go, there's others w/more up-to-date knowledge than I. But you can Google it and find a good list of companies that rent everything from tubes to deck boats (used to have a huge list but lost it when we moved from dial-up to cable).

Well, lb2, good luck if you choose to accept this mission. I have to go for now, but if that's not enough, I will be back.

A 17 year old on our CA beaches in July. I know exactly what he wants.

Dad to disappear for a few days.
Just drop his butt off with a couple of bucks and a lot of condoms and you won't be able to get the smile off his face till he's 30 or more years old.

4x4ing in bear sound like alot of fun to, Did not know you can do that I know my 16 year old had a blast going up the riverbed to the falls in havi, he like to rock climb and hike.

4x4ing in bear sound like alot of fun to, Did not know you can do that I know my 16 year old had a blast going up the riverbed to the falls in havi, he like to rock climb and hike.

Here's a good site for some info. Includes hikeing trails as well.

http://www.bigbear.us/offroad.html

I like fawnskin area and holcomb valley area. These area's can be travled and enjoyed by fire roads. I've done in our stock durango.
And there are trails with VW sized rocks I've done in our jeeps.

You can see a few pics here
