Wonder if I can get some input here

Wife and I are celebrating 25 years in June. We have decided we 'prefer' to stay in the US, for a few reasons.

Neither of us have been to the eastern states. Our first thought is Niagara Falls. But seems like most of the nice places to stay and visit are in Canada as opposed to the US.??
Is this true? Not a deal breaker, but we just thought it would be nice (patriotic maybe??) to spend our $$ in the US.

If not Niagara, then where? We're only planning on a 4 or 5 night stay so no real time to travel around.

Where would you go? Why?

We like natural wonders, lakes and rivers (boat tours), and a fun adult night life. Don't like bus tours with 80+ year olds. Not crazy about beach destinations (florida), we live near the beach. Would be nice to see something we can't see in our back yard.

Any and all opinions are appreciated.   :bowdown

Hmmm, you don't want the beach...but I really liked Hilton Head Island in SC.  We rented a beach house and bikes.  There were nature preserves to ride through, plus you can ride thru the golf courses and look for gators. :D  The island is divided up into plantations, we stayed in Sea Pines.  There were some good restaurants and an outdoor patio area where you could drink and listen to live entertainment.  It really was one of my favorite vacations and I'd love to go back and explore the area more.  I havent' been to NC yet but everyone I know loves it too.  Most of my east coast trips involve the southeast.  I'd love to travel through New England, it's on my list. I really want a lobster roll!  Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard/Cape Cod are places I'd love to see, but summertime stinks there, just too many people.  Early June might be fine.  Never been to Niagra, nor anywhere in Canada, but there are a lot of places I'd like to see there.  I'll keep thinking.

Well, beach area's aren't completely out, just don't want the beach to be the main attraction.

Been to Charlotte, NC. Just for a few days for work. I liked the area. Not a NASCAR fan, but had to visit the speedway. Amazing how big that place is.

Anyone been to Baltimore or anywhere in the chesapeake bay area? Just looking at maps for idea's.

This is why I like cruises, just get on the boat and everything is there for you. Also still an option, but my wife gets seasick. Also looking for something we haven't done before.

I've been to the Norfolk/Virgina Beach portion of the Cheasapeake Bay, but it was in winter...on a small sailboat, in a storm and with the flu. :eek  :rolleyes  :laugh   But it was a fun place, seems like lots to do.  Went looking for whales in the bay but found none. :(

If you have piles of money, I'd suggest the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulfer Springs, WV.  It's a 5 diamond resort and has it's own cold war bunker! :good  :D

Awww damn, just saw that it filed for Chap. 11 and is being taken over by Marriot. :(   Wow...a sad ending for a legendary place. It survived the Great Depression and the Cold War. Glad I got to experience it in my lifetime.

Hmmm, maybe rooms are cheap now! :good

It really was a cool place...you can read about it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Greenbrier

I'm still thinking of more ideas!

How about something like Boston. Tons of American History type sites in the area, both on and off the water, as well as many around and out of the city.

Yeah, DC is at the bottom of the short list. Would be cool to see all that, but seems more of an educational, than a fun trip.

Besides, if I'm in DC I may not be able to overcome the temptation to throw a rock at the White House. At the very least, a handfull of tea bags.  :D

I stayed at a place right outside the entrance to Minutemen Park. Short drive to the city for day trips.

Isn't that part of the Smithsonian. Another good Air and Space Museum is in Redstone Arsenal, AL.

Thanks for all the input, uh..  peeps.

After throwing around several ideas, including Boston and an Alaskan cruise (till my wife figured out alaska is cold  :cold  )

Looks like we will be taking a cruise out of Miami for 5 days and then spend two days in Miami.

I kept bringing up the points that we've done two cruise's before and I don't like to just lay around a beach. Wanted to do/see something different.

I said, well, if we're going to vacation at a beach in sunny weather, I'm gonna rent a harley to cruise around Miami. She's all in.
Now maybe I can talk her into getting tooed at Miami Ink?
