So...my daughter is graduating this month....I hope  :stupid

And she has been dropping hints (if you call holding a gun to my head at the breakfast table, saying, "Buy it for me or else!" a hint!;)  about what she would like to receive as a Graduation present.

A Laptop computer.

So....I've been keeping one eye open for deals. But there's one catch. She really, really, really (her words) had her heart set on a Mac.

So I look at the Macs. Then I quickly look away in order to save what's left of my eyesight. Damn, those dollar signs are sharp! :eek

I then start looking at the PC based machines...but then I start to get confused. What IS a laptop? Some look like laptops, but are called Notebooks, some are "Desktop Replacements - but they sure do look a lot like a laptop to me...bigger maybe, but much the same.  :rolleyes

Now they have these Netbooks...clearly not a Laptop...or a Notebook, but not a pocket computer or a PDA either!  :banghead

So I'm still looking...and I see that now they have "Smartbooks"!  :stupid

That's a cross between a Smartphone and a Netbook!...I think.  :(

I prepared a long speech for my daughter to explain just how much more computer we (I) could buy for the money if we look at the PC products....she looks at me with those eyes..OK Daddy, if you can't afford the Mac, I understand.  :cry

Oh I needed that. I look to the wife for support. HA.

Whatever you think is best dear.  :p  Knowing full well I'll crumble without her support.

So the day is getting closer and I still haven't bought the graduation gift. I'm setting myself up to be the biggest loser, schmuck ever in my daughter's eyes. :beat

so.....yesterday I start looking at Macs again. Now my right eye is swollen and I can barely see out of the left one.

The credit card company put a hold on my card after the first two purchases yesterday morning... :comp  seems someone was on-line buying things I don't normally buy.....expensive things. :puke

I had to call them to reassure them that, sadly, it was me. They lift the hold and I finish my last purchase - Lojack for Laptops. She'll get a lock and a locking cabinet to go with it, but I can't be there 900 miles away to make sure she uses them. So the Lojack seems like a good idea.  :rolleyes

So last night my wife asks me about dinner after Graduation....

....I went to the kitchen, grabbed a can of Campbell's soup and set it down in front of her and walked out of the room!

:peace

LMAO.  I'm feeling your pain.  Mine will graduate next year and go away to college.  I'm already saving up for a laptop for her.  Wish I could get ME a mac and give her this PC. But that would go over like a fart in church.  :fight

So what Mac did you get??  :laugh

Believe me it will be cheaper in the long run if you factor in the emotional distress....

Now watch, she will change to business and need a PC.... :banghead

Did I get? You mean, Did I pay for!  :laugh  :banghead

She got the 17" MacBook Pro with the fast processor and I'll put in some extra ram myself....ain't paying Apple's price for ram  :break  (gee, now I decide to get cheap  :rolleyes )

Apple was nice enough to throw in a free iPod Touch so I can pre-record all my polka albums on it!  :D

I also got IWork '09 Family pack software and Lojack for laptops for both this new one and the MacBook Pro I already have. I already have the cable lock/alarm for it and I'm having my son in law the locksmith find me a deal on a locking cabinet for her dorm room.

But if it lasts for 4 years I'll be happy. Problem is I have to do this again in about 3 years for her sister.....at least she prefers PC. Maybe by then there will be some kind of implant I can get her?  :stupid

Right on Gary, I have mine running Parallels and XP pro. Had to actually. I remote into my network with it from time to time and it works quite well. I set up another Mac for a sales rep using Boot Camp and XP. He has the least problems of all the reps. Go figure.

Aside from the fact that we did a big job for Apple Store's Christmas campaign in '08 (Giant Santa & Elf in the front window) I'm slowly inching my way over to the dark side.... :laugh

Cali, you should have told me earlier, I've already hit my Apple limit for this year!  :comp

But, the main thing I look at is initial cost, and future repair cost.  Throw in the fact that the next Microsoft Operating System was PURPOSELY designed by MS to resemble MAC OS and I think the edge has to go to the non mac.  Good luck fixing the hardware on a MAC...If you can get parts they are pricey and then you have to find someone that will work on it.  Cheaper to throw away an intel based LT and get a new one than it is to repair a Mac

I just purchased 5  2.2 ghz 1gb RAM Laptops for $100 each.  Try to find a deal like that on a MAC....Non-Existent

And when you figure out how to 'splain that to your 17 year old daughter, the apple of your eye, for whom you'd lay down your life, who "really, really," wants one as a graduation gift...

let me know !  :p
