Quote (CaliKat @ June 15 2009,5:02 pm) | Quote (freddog @ June 14 2009,11:19 pm) | I'm glad that I get an exemption because I get a jury summons in the mail about once a month. Â It's actually too bad that the court system treats jurors and potential jurors so poorly. Â It really is a priveledge and an educational experience for those that don't go to court regularly. Â I have a lot of people ask me all the time "what is court really like, is it like TV". Â I always tell them to go to the courts and sit in on a trial someday...see the real world People's Court |
The system definitely needs an overhaul. Â I've been summoned a number of times, most end up in the call in and dismiss but I've had to go to the courthouse more than my fair share of times. Â And twice I invested several days, only to not make the cut at the end. Â The first time it happened I found out just how random the selection ISN'T. Â I ended up in the same jury pool as a coworker, neither of us realizing it til we found each other in the courthouse. Â We were the same age, had the exact same education, had the same job, looked similar, had similar personalities, etc. Â We sat through several days of jury selection and the pool was rapidly dwindling, and still neither of us had been called. Â They finally got 12 seated on the jury but needed 2 alternates and there were only 6 of us left. Â And still neither of us were called. Â I think with 3 left they finally got the 2 alternates. Â When we questioned the system we were assured that it was all done by a computer spitting out the numbers that were assigned to us....I don't buy it. Â Both of us wanted to be a part of the jury so we could see how it really is. Â And it was no picnic being off work all those days, since no subs were provided for us. Â That meant we had to make up all those sessions when we got back.
The second one that I mentioned in a previous post went on even longer. Â First day we filled out the 50 page questionaire. Â Then we had a week off for the attorneys to go over all the questionaires. Â Then they called us in to discuss any questionable answers. Â Then the judge had a conflict, so we were off a few more days before they started the real selection/questioning process. Â We got thru a couple days of selection, then there was a 2 week break for spring break/easter. Â Then we went back to selection, which went on several more days before I was finally axed. I wanted to do my duty that time too, but nooooooooooo. Â
Cali has a one day/one trial rule....but what they don't tell you is the "trial" actually starts from the day you're told to show up, and they apparently can take as long as they damn well please to seat a jury. Â Â After that last experience I am not eager to go through this again, and will make that very clear to any judge I get. Â And then I'll tell him I know freddog. Â Â |
Geez, and I thought my experience was poor.
