Hey guys, need some help here. My Dad (in his infinite wisdom), put off his DL renewal until tomorrow. We leave for GA on the 31st. Now we've got the family argument going on about whether or not he'll have his photo ID for the trip.
*I* have always gotten my old licenses returned to me to use until my new one arrives. DMV punches a little rectangular hole in it to show it will soon be expired, but I have always been able to use it as proof of ID. I've never had to go thru TSA with it though. Both my parents SWEAR that hey have never been given their licenses back from the DMV. I just don't see how that is possible. It's a state agency, the policies can't differ between norcal and socal.
Assuming I am right, will he be able to go thru TSA with his current photo ID and the interim paper license? Our other option would be to cancel the appt and get one immediately upon his return from GA, but given his track record for getting sick and ending up in hospitals when traveling, I don't like that option much at all.
Any thoughts?

If they don't give them back you have no valid form of photo ID, unless you walk around with a passport. How can you even use a credit card without it?
I did call...and miracle of miracles, got a live, english speaking human being on the phone! They DO give them back, with a hole punched in them, meaning they are valid only as photo ID along with your temp. But when I asked if TSA accepts it, she gave a hesitant yes, followed by.."*I* would wait to renew and use the current ID in order to get thru TSA easily." That's exactly how I felt. So she changed his appt to when we get back, which will be 2 days before the license expires.
Maybe you have to tell them at the DMV that you have no other valid form of photo ID for them to give it back, but I know I have all 2 or 3 of my previous licenses. And like I said, in this day and age you need to have something to cover you in the interim, unless you cease to exist in the 3-6 weeks it takes to mail you a new license. I wish CA was one of those states that handed you the license before you walk out the door. Other states do, and it sure would make life a lot easier.

Yup, barring our usual travel catastrophes, he should be okay. Now PASSING the renewal tests in another story...
I really am curious about the whole interim license thing though. Am I the only one who has gotten her old licenses back? Maybe my little rural DMV office is way ahead of the curve compared to the rest of the state?

They'll give you the old one back if you ask for it to use it for ID, that's the reason for the hole punched!..

I renewed on line a day or two before the expiration date therefore I kept my old license. If it's not too late look at the letter and see if you can renew on line.
