We played hookie from work last Tuesday and went to Saguaro. The water and weather were AWESOME! The old PowerCats still have it! :good

Mine is the White 1960 15C with 1961 Merc 700's. The Green is my buddy Dick Davis's 1959 14C with 1963 McCullouch 75's.

Green is faster than white..  :banghead

Moving up to some bigger motors.. 62 Merc 1000's.  :D

We've jacked them up and added low water pickups with nose cones to the lower units.. much bigger props too..

White should definetly beat green now!! :jumpie

The 20 to 65 punch should be neck snapping.

All should be done within the next week or so.

Jeff

Hi Waterdog,

They are pretty big 14" dia. "choppers". They are designed for surfacing applications. The centerline of the prop shaft is about even with the bottom of the boat. Approx. 1/2 of the prop will be out of the water when on plane.. With any luck at all I'll need bigger.

These are 90 cid, 2 stroke, 6 cylinder, 3 carbs.. These are 62's, the first 100Hp outboard. Even at 46 years old they can make some power.. Merc did a great job at refining the design of the inline 6 into the 80's finishing off with a 99 cid 150 Hp. They finally went to the V6.

They should kick A$$ and still be period correct..

Jeff

Hi Elite,

When we have to, one of these has already been rebuilt. The other appears to be a good survivor. We've checked them out (short block) and all seems to be OK. We'll finish the tune, go thru the carbs and go from there..

If they blow hopefully we've got enough spare parts to piece them back together.. Otherwise I guess i'll have to look into moving up to 99 cid's.. :eek

We finshed the rigging and got the motors running on Sunday.. (12 hr. day)

Took it to the lake on Monday and the thing hauls the mail. White is definetly faster than green.  :jumpie  Didn't get speeds as I couldn't stay in it very long and the pickup was out of the water most of the time and bouncing like crazy (the water and wind sucked).

The motors aren't to high nor are the props to big, spun them to 6K no problem. Once everything is dialed in we are hoping for 65 to 70 mph range..

Need to fix a fuel issue with one of them and paint up the cowls tonight. After a couple of days we'll do the decals..

Now to get it to turn and she should be done, torque on the wheel makes it imposible at speed..

It's an Absolute ANIMAL, I love it.. :D

I hope they hold together, a pair 99 CID's will be to much, it's just at the edge now and I don't have a death wish..

Jeff

Got the motors Dolled up.

We think they came out Awesome even if they look like newer late models, a mix of 69 and a XS Limited addition.

Still 62's under the hoods.. :D

I don't know whats up with the 1st pic, must be a website picture compression thing??

Jeff

Hi ToneDog,

(I know picking up an old conversation)

They are 24". I Might be looking for a little more prop.

Had one of the Powerheads go sour in July so we went thru another one. She got a new rotating assembly, the starboard motor is all freshened up. New ring's, bearings, and seals, another hour or two and she'll be broken in. Popping 70 on the speedo. (there is more to be had) Next run with good water I'll trim them out another hole and see what it can do. She's getting pretty flighty now. Cruises at 50 around 4700 rpm.. They are pulling 6200 wide open..

Jeff

My Buddy Dick and master mind of our operation took her for a spin :good
