When I rebuilt my engine I bought new plugs. I bought the same plugs that were in there from the previous owner assuming they were the right kind. But now I got to thinking that maybe I should reexamine that and make sure I am using the proper plugs.

I don’t know anything about selecting spark plugs. So this may be a stupid question but how do I go about determining the correct plugs for my set up and does changing plugs make a difference?

I buy my plugs by the year of the heads/engine. I try all different kinds. I was using Bosch Platinums last. Sometimes a little hotter(1 or 2 steps) over stock works good in jets since the run pretty cool. If you can learn to read how the plugs are burning(color of tip) that helps. The "How to Hotrod BBC Book" has some good tips.

My 1 1/2 cents

Yep I was thinking about making a jig so that I could set the Plug gap to .035 ± .00005.  :D

Thanks Gofast I do have tapered seat plugs. Autolight 24’s it is. :)

I’m still going to read the book AZKC suggested and ask a lot of questions. Just to stick to tradition. :D

Does anybody know if that book has been updated?  I've got an old edition, printed sometime in the mid-70's I think, and it's a good read, but the aftermarket has surpassed alot of the factory stuff recomended in that book.

And unless you're GoFast (who seems to grow rare crankshafts and heads in his back yard), some of that stuff is hard to find, at least in my neck of the woods.  It would be nice to know if some of the newer parts have been incorporated in the book.

A lot of that stuff is still available new, they just have replacement numbers for it. Like the old 990 heads, they are available as 482, same casting!.. :good
