Hey Kevin, The pic you posted of you head damage with the valve smashed into the valve guide looks like it will be able to be fixed. I had one do the samething and no problem with the fix. Are you going to be able to make it to RWYB? Look forward to seeing you Becky again. :good  :drink

I laugh every time I look at that head :laugh And say to my self "You should take that over to the shop and see if it can be fixed" I've saying that for almost 6 months.

RWYB is a maybe. I have to figure out where I left that sack of money :stupid I might go to a PDR school out in the Anahiem area, maybe I could overlap the two.

Well I got all gung ho and went to take the head in. Figure I'd try to get the valve out to save for old times sake and the focking head is cracked :angry

I know a guy on hot boat with a single 049 head, guess I'll have to look him up :phone

What would they do weld up the crack? I pretty sure the valve seat can be changed out no prob but I thought the crack would deem it DOA :stupid

Depends on the depth of the crack. Most of the time a deep grind and inserts then welding will do the trick. Hard to tell the depth of the damage. Drop it off to your machine guy and get his opinion. :stupid  :stupid

Personally I don't think it's worth fixing, there's too many cores out there cheap, you can pick up a set for less than it would cost to fix it. If it were a 990 head then I'd say fix it for sure!..My .02... :rolleyes

AZKC, Get an estimate on the head. You never know. If it is too much then you can replace a 049 cheep. The one I had fixed was a 990 and not to many around as GFR said. I have major $$$$ in the porting & polishing on the set that I'm running. Good luck and hope to see it on the water soon. :good  :beer

I think I will let them at least look at it, but I'm still a pair of heads short for my back up motor so I'll keep looking for another pair of 049's. Or maybe Becky will buy me some of those Edelbrock marine heads :D

Was it worth the $$$$$$$ you put into those 990's?? :confused Seems like unless you get a set dirt cheap, it don't seem practical to mess with 990's when you can get aftermarkets that will flow better out of the box. I run 990's and I got them super cheap and did all the work on them myself, still have quite a bit a $$$$$ in them!.. :rolleyes

GFR, I had the head work done and ran them for 2 seasons and when I did my rebuild I found a crack. So the investment in repairing was worth it. I have the ports ceramic coated and I love the way they came out. If they fail again in the future I WILL be changing them out but for now I like what I have.

That's what I do most likely after this season. I went through the whole motor and made some bigger changes in April last year. So far so good. Just need some dialing in on the pump but it runs very strong. :good  :beer
Good luck on the GN hope to hook up with ya this season :good  :beer

I'll be running my flat though, first time out will be Needles. I may even tear down that turd and bump up the compression to where it should be, maybe then I can run 37.9 mph....Hope to see ya on the river!.. :good  :beer

You got it. The one change I did was to bump my compression up to 13.5 to 1. I hope to hit 39.9 mph but you know how those jet boats are even with close to 785 hp. I figure I'm losing half that by the time I start the motor :fight

Yeah that's what I need to do is bump it up to 13.5, this cam I got has so much overlap that it bleeds off a lot of compression, but it sure has a lot of torque though!.. :good

I hear ya on the over lap. My over lap is 112. And your right about the torque. When you step on it at about 3500 rpm it definately puts you back in your set :jumpie
