Boat with an Engine Cover

I posted this over a River Rats. But realized that some of the people over here don’t go over there. So I thought I would share it with you guys.

I am not sure if this is really custom but it is a project I am working on and it has some machining involved. I wanted to put a hydraulic place diverter into my boat and didn’t want those dangling coils hanging from the trim switch. So I decided to run the wires through the center of my steering column.

I started by disassembling the steering column and mounting the shaft in the lathe to drill the 12 deep hole through it.

Then I mounted the wheel mounting plate in the mill so I could ball mill a slot for the wires.

After Machining the slot

The assembled unit on the boat

Test fitting so you can see how the wire is run through the slot and then the center of the steering column.

Completed unit no dangling wires here.

Sorry about the quality of the pictures it was a little dark in the garage

That looks good Miller!  :good Havent you been wanting to takle this project for a while now?  I couldnt tell from the pic but can you see any of the wire from the rear? I am just curious. Beacuase your making me wonder if any of my wire is visible?
I dont care how sh*t works as long as it works.  :good

Also will putting a hole through the mounting shaft weaken it at all? Ok last question, did you need to buy extra cable, or was it already supplied with the diverter?  :confused

Yes I have been thinking about doing this for some time now. To answer your questions. I bought that switch from Rex Marine and it had the cable attached to it the diverter also came with cabling. Between the two I will have enough to complete the project.

If you look closely you can see about 1 inch of the cable behind the wheel before it enters the hub. I could have gone a shorter route but I wanted it to enter on the bottom so water that splashes on the wheel wouldn’t flow into the slot.

The hole in the steering column is a .250 hole. Technically it probably weakens the shaft a little. But with the amount of load that a steering wheel gets I think that it will have no affect.

Well, the first thing I would do would be to take the engine cover off.  :D  (I had to get that in before Art did).

Looks cool Miller, very sanitary installation.   :good

:rotflmao  Yeah, I have that big ugly coiled cord hanging from my steering wheel. :eek  It sort of reminds me of my CB days though because that's what our mike cords looked like. :rotflmao

Brad, that looks really clean. :good

You should really lay off the "grape juice" when milling.  I know ya make it and it probably doesn't cost you much and all but   :drink   .... while milling is just  :beat
