I heard I may be able to add a super charger to my 454.  I don't know anything about this, but I heard it may add some horse power.  How is this on gas?  Does it make the engine take up more room in the compartment?  Does it make a big difference?  Ant info would help.

Thanks

Well, if you are just slapping a blower on a 454 engine, forget it.  To do it right, plan on changing a bunch of internal engine parts in order for it to make enough horsepower for it to be worth your while.  And forget your gas mileage....that goes out the door with a blower.  It doesn't really take up much more room.  Depends on what type of intake you're running currently.  Basically, it may go UP a few inches, but not really alot of extra room.

To summarize, if you are gonna spend the $$ on a Supercharger, the only way to make it worth while is to rebuild the engine for the blower.  Otherwise, the increase in HP is minimal compared to what it cost ya.  I've seen supercharged jet boats out at the lake that can barely run 80 mph, but on the other hand, I've seen them at the races that run in the 140's.  Like I said, to do it right, ya have to build the rest of the motor too, or else it isn't worth it.  IMO :D

Oh yeah, another issue to think about.  If you just add a supercharger to a basically stock or mild build engine, be prepared to have your engine blow up on ya.  :eek   Cast Pistons and cast crankshafts don't care much for boost

For a bone stock 454 I wouldn't put anything more than a Weiand 177, see quite a few of those they seem to work ok!. Personally, I would rebuild the motor with heavy duty parts and go with an 8:71!.. :good

Thanks for the info.  I want to add something to the engine to make if have a better get up and go, but I have no interest in racing my boat.  Maybe just going a little faster.

Like the old saying say's........Speed Costs How Fast Do You Want Too Go :beer If you want you can just always just add a Cam & Tunnel Ram with Carbs and a Nice looking Scoop for starters, But you will get hooked and then have to do the bottom end.....Boring & Piston change :)

Speed costs money, how fast can you afford to go???   :D

Hey tunamaster, I picked up 42 mph "bolting on " a supercharger  :rotflmao  OK, so "bolt-on" wasn't the best choice of words. It took one blown up 454 and 2 different superchargers :)  I wrote a bit about my trials going from 72 mph to 114 pph. Here's a link.
