I ran down and a picked up a battery for the campbell yesterday after work then headed over to KC's to see if the boat would run (I know, I know, I should have found that out before I payed the man, but I figured that the boat and V-drive were worth the purchase price, but I digress...) .

Well, after fiddling with the starter, (I'm gonna need an external selenoid), and figuring out that the little red wire in the bottom of the boat is supposed to go to positive side of the coil (another thing to do), it fired right up.  I only ran it long enough to verify oil pressure and roughly set the timming, but man it sounded cool.

OK, so now a few questions.  I figured out how to get the v-drive out of gear, but I need to know how to get water to the pump.  I'm thinking I could use a 5 gal bucket, stuff the water pick-up hose into it, then feed the bucket with a garden hose.  That should work, correct?? I'd like to run it on the trailer a little while to set timming and check everything out before I drag it up to the lake.

The boat doesn't have an alternator, so I'm going have to remove the electric fuel pump and put in mechanical gauges.  Any idea how long the battery will last just firing the ignition (It's a Mallory Unilite as far as I can tell) ?

I've got a small list of things to take care of before I hit the water, but this should be pretty fun.   :good

I hope you didn't run more than 30 seconds with a dry pump! :eek That's all it takes to fry an impellor!..The proper way to run water is to use a bucket and let it draw it's own water. If you use a hose there's too much chance of either starving the pump or having too much pressure!..

There's no problem running it on the trailer just on the battery, but I would put an alternator on if you're going to keep that ignition even if you get rid of all the electrical guages and pump...BTW, that is not a reliable unit!..If you want to clean it all up, put a mag in it, only one wire and no drain on the battery!..

A couple of things to look at!. Check the strut bushing, if the shaft flops aroung in there it's time for a new one, it will vibrate and also wear the shaft. Check the shaft log seal, if it has a grease fitting, give it a shot of grease but only until you feel resistance or you will blow the seal. Also the rudder will have a bearing on the top with a grease fitting, give that one a shot too. Then check the plate rod at the transom, if it has a seal, it should get a shot also. Check your steering cables, make sure that's working smoothe and it has no kinks or frays in the cable...Other than that just make sure everything is tight, a lot of people don't check things!..

No, it ran for maybe 10-15 seconds, just long enough to swing the distributer a little, checked oil pressure, and shut it off.

I'll check all the other stuff out here in the next couple days.  I've already checked to stearing, and it all looks cool.  Looks like something straight out of my Cessna.  :D

The shaft log seal does have a zert on it, I'll be sure to grease it.  I guess you check the strut bushing by wiggling the prop shaft??

Who makes a mag for an FE Ford??  I looked yesterday a little, but all I could find was ones for Chevy's.

Vertex makes 2 of them for Ford. One with fixed advance, the other 12 degree advance and can be found at http://www.summitracing.com/  :good

The part # for the fixed is TAY-702010

The part # for the 12 degree is TAY-702000

When you see the prices, you'll think they're for your Cessna.  :eek

You can pick up good Vertex's for $350 then you can send it over to Don Zig and have it converted to an FE, I don't think Sumitt has it for the FE just the "385" series. If you want new, you can get one from Don Zig, might be even cheaper?? There used to be tons of em around but now you can't find them unless you buy new and they are expensive!. :eek To check the strut bushing just grab the end of the shaft and try to move it around, you should have very little to no movent!...

That's what I was thinking.  I'll look around for a used one.  Can you shoot me Don Zig's info?  Would appreciate it.  Thanks Art.

Never mind, I found his website.   :good

OK, I talked to the guys at Don Zig's and he told me what to look for (I had a pretty good idea, but just to be sure).  Looks like I'll end up spending about what I would for a good electronic ignition to go to a mag.

I found this old Ronco on Ebay, looks pretty clean, the base is rusted, but I'm gonna need a new one of those for the Ford anyway.

So Art, what do you think?  It looks to be in alright shape, case looks straight, can't tell if anyone has been inside it or not.  I'm going to go hit the speed shops tomorrow, take a look at all the bulletin boards, maybe I can find something nice and close.  :D

Nothing wrong with that as long as the price is right. You don't care about the housing anyways since it has to be changed over to FE.. :good

Well, I bought a mag today (thanks for the heads up Art  :good ), should be here next week, the turn right around and off to Don Zig's.  The bad news is that it's going to take DZ's two to three weeks to turn the mag around.   :cry New cap and wires included also.   :good

I guess I'm just going to have to go out with a spare battery for a little while till I get the mag in.  :D

Projects for the next couple days off include taking the old CF numbers off, putting the new AZ numbers on, pulling the electric fuel pump and putting a mechanicle on, straightening out the wiring, and maybe trying to get a back seat mocked up.

God I love this hot boat shit.   :D

Any reason why you don't just add a 1 wire GM style alternator?  :confused Seems to me it would save you a lot of hassle in the long run, or am I just simply missing something?  :stupid

The motor is driving off the front, where the harmonic damper is supposed to be (as far as I can it was rigged as a circle boat), so there is now easy way to add an alternator.  I would have to adapt an alternator off the flywheel.

The mag is alot easier way to go.
