Anyone have any experiance in building your own engine rails?

I am planning to use the front motor plate and the rear bell housing off the old 4 point mount as patterns and cut the new plates out of .25 aluminum.

As for the rails, I was going to use .25 aluminum angle.

What do I need to use to tie the plates and the rails togather?

This is for and Olds.

Thanks

Wow! Your work looks really nice. I like all the billet hardware in v-drives. It just looks cool.

Your boat

Are these parts Anodized or Candy Powder Coated? I really like the color.

Looked at your photos, nice work gofast.

One question, I've been told the .25 aluminum is a little this for the plates.  I've been told .375 would be better.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for the compliments guys!. All my stuff is Anodized, made out of 6061.

Sleek, my plates are 3/16", when it was "K" boat, they had 1/4", some guys like the thick plates but I can't see any reason for it, it just makes it that much harder to push them down and adjust!. If you're going to use angle on the stringers to mount the motor, 2x2x1/4 angle and 3/8 motor plates bolted to a triangular block on each corner is perfect, simple and cool, but there are other ways also.
When you make you're own it's neat to do something unique!.. Let me know if I can help!..Good luck!... :)

Thanks, I've been looking at those for a couple weeks now.  I still haven't decided on the final plan yet though.

Right now I'm thinking of using the 4-point mounts with modifications, and placing a piece of channel over the stringer and bolting the brackets to those.

Just a note: If you use stainless nuts and bolts, make sure you lube the threads other wise you may not get them off!.. :eek

Yeah, stainless galls real easy when dry. When you back off a nut, it will grab, when it does it's all over with, time for the nut splitter. All my stuff is stainless except for the engine mounts, I use plated grade eight's!.  :)

I like to use Moly grease, just a tad is all that's needed, no need to smear a whole pile on, just so it don't go on dry, same on AN fittings, anno against anno ain't too cool either!..   :eek  ;)

Still working on another project... finishing up my Cutlass.

On the plus side (time wise anyways) we are still about 2 to 2 1/2 months till boating season around here.  So, the calender is still on my side at least.

I'm going to start ordering parts after I get back from the Drag races at Vegas this weekend.

72 Cutlass.  455.   Ugly green outside, ugly green inside.

But that doesn't matter because all anyone see's is the tailights.  :D  :D

I'll try to post some pics of it one of these days.
