Brand new coil left me  tied behind a fishing boat on my last trip.

Second time this has happened. Will heat in the engine compartment burn up a coil? They both went bad after a long run at high speed followed by wakeless speed in a cove only to quit about 100 yrds out of the cove.

454 jet, old log headers, covered compartment ,with all kinds of crap stored back there. Would this be a good excuse to upgrade to new headers. Ditching the cover is not an option, the wife likes it up there........ :ass  :eek

Angie,  really, I'm too lazy too change the screen name.

If your running a standard round 12 volt coil ck your voltage going to your coil you only want around I think 7 volts going to the positive side you may have to install a ballast resistor. 12 volts or more will cause premature coil death. Engine compartment temp really shouldn't be a factor :stupid

I have a ballast resistor. Its an aftermarket coil big fat somthing or other. First time that it did this was with a stock coil, So I replaced everything, and it worked for a while. My gut tells me heat or at least that is what I'm telling the mrs, so I can spring for some new headers :D . Yet I would still like to be sure. :flamed

Since you mentioned the coil is a big fat aftermarket, I'm guessing you don't have an HEI system.  :confused

It's very possible your condenser's going bad if you're running points and eating up the coil. You might also want to check the dwell.

The under cover temp in a boat is negligible compared to under the hood of a car and should not be a factor.

Another thing to consider if the Mrs. wants to keep the cover is through the transom headers will generate more ambient heat as opposed to logs.  :drink

Yes still points. Dwell is good as far as I know. Drag racing buddy helped me replace all the stuff last time it broke down.

Will headers really make more heat then the logs. My buddy is running Lightning headers on his small block and they are only warm to the touch.

I will recheck all the ignition crap and maybe its time to ditch the points.

Thanks guys

Lightning headers are water jacketed, that's why the run cool.  Most boat headers (Rewarders, Bassett) are water injected, and get freakin' hot, you can't run them under an engine cover.

You might look at dumping the points.  There are a couple companies that make solid state components that replace the points, so you get to keep your orig. distributer and get the advantages of electronic ignition.

Well, I've got an MSD HEI in my 85 GMC, and it's the only thing that works well on it right now.  Andrew has a complete 6AL system w/billet distributer on the Chevelle and never has had any problems with it either.

Seems I've met just as many people that have had good luck with them as bad.  But I don't know if I'd spend the money again.

I built a stock GM points type distributer with a petronix electronic conversion, but haven't had a chance to throw it on the Cutlass yet.  Cost me about $80.00, and I've heard nothing but good things about how well the distributer work after the conversion.  We'll see.

I've installed Petronix on my '70 Mustang and '71 Bronco and for the money, you just can't beat it.  :good
