Quote (AZKC @ Nov. 02 2004,2:55 pm) | I'm on hold till I figure out what block I'm going to use and also what pistons. Since they seem to be the root of all my anguish therse last couple of times. I've got the heads back from Larry's they came out very nice. Becky says buy a smaller cam and use the pistons I have, I told her BS never go smaller if anything go bigger  |
Ok back on topic!. Did you destroy the block the last time? Do you have pistons now??, you can always fly cut the pistons for valve clearance, unless they don't match the combustion chambers of your heads, then naturally you would have to get different ones!..

Quote (AZKC @ Nov. 04 2004,6:35 am) | Not sure on the block, still sitting in the boat, will be taking it out in about a week or so. Â But I have my other short block with OEM flat top pistons. I talked to Larry about flycutting these, but a little more compression would be nice
I may do some clay impressions on this other short block it seemed to have more clearance(no marks on pistons) but it will be a different set off heads. Whats a good number for piston to valve clearance? |
Are the pistons in both motors have the same dome cofigurations????, in other words do they both match the chambers in the heads you are going to use??, compression depends on this!. The trick to make power with low compression is to squeeze the shit out of the quench area(effiency) then flycut the pistons for clearance if neccessary!..Minimum V/P clearance is .080 on the exhaust and .100 on the intake, I like to maintain that on any motor wether it's a stocker or a race motor just to be on the safe side!..

Looks like those would be ideal for your application, would still have to measure everything up though to get 9.5 :1!..

Put one set of valves on with light springs, put one piston in and the cam, put the head on with lifters, pushrods and rockers, adjust valves, bring that cylinder up on overlap, put you dial indicator on and measure clearance!..
