I got new exhaust tips and a new ramp scoop for x-mas.
I am having a hard time getting the old ones off since they are all siliconed on. Any suggestions on taking the silicone off
so I can install the new ones?

Thanks,

Brian

I used a plastic putty knife to cut the tips away from the hull. I was afraid the metal ones would scratch the boat. I hope this helps.

Permatex makes a silicone gasket remover, but I don't know if would harm gel coat.  Here's the web page for it:

Find something the same ID and use it to help get some leverage on the tips so you can pop them loose. Or if your not going to reuse or sell them, get a big pipe wrench on them :break If they have flanges maybe driving some sort of wooden or plastic wedge between the transom and the tip would work. Then there is allways the Sawzall :flamed

Yeah but you got to be real careful, I've done it like that before and end up pulling the gelcoat and it will pull the paint even easier. I use solvent it just loves silicone, let it sit for a bit and it'll fall apart and you can wipe it off with your fingers!.. :good

That's some new shit, I'll have to try it. It says it won't harm paint so I'm sure it won't hurt gelcoat!.. :stupid

What kind of tips are they, do they have mufflers. With the new noise laws, Im going to have to replace mine before summer. I think its 88db at idle 3 feet from the back of the boat.

I've heard of guys using guitar strings to saw gently through the silicone (never have personally tried this).  I always recommend as little silicone as possible to make a water seal.  Some go a bit overboard on the install which can make the removal very difficult.  I've seen tips removed with the flanges all bent up just from peeps prying them off.  A little heat on the exhaust tip (not the gelcoat) from a propane torch will help break the silicone too.

Good luck

That's Cali's new testing procedure for their old law.

And the dB limit is higher for older boats, I believe it's 92 dB?

AZ's law and procedure are still the same as before... for now.

If anyone needs copies of the J2005 & J1970 SAE test specs (law now in CA) just send me a PM with your email.  I have them both now as word.docs.  SAE will charge you $$ for them.
