Well I decided that it was time to rewire my boat. The original wires were working but I just didn’t trust them. I have a thing against crimp connections. I guess all the years of building military hardware has made me not trust them. So I decided to rewire it and use solder on connectors with shrink wrap. I also added a fuse on the main power and a terminal block for power distribution. So far it is coming out pretty good. Now I just have to get the wires all the way to the back and hooked up on that end.

Winter projects are fun!.......

Look's good Brad....  :good

However...did you remember that wires don't have the same ampacity as they do when not in a bundle, and did you increase the wire guage accordingly???  :D  :ass

Very nice work there Brad, I agree on the crimp deal, it's ok on some stuff but you can't beat solder!..I go one step further, I use "Liquid Tape" on the connections that finalizes it!.  :)  :good

From the pics, those wires are plenty adequate for guages!.. :)

As long as you solder it right... a contaminated, disturbed, or cold solder joint is t-r-o-u-b-l-e.

Crimp connections, if done porperly, will give as many hours of service as a soldered connection.  The key is to use a crimp terminal that has an insulation crimp as well (like AMP terminal or Thomas and Betts).  That takes the strain off the wire crimp and it'll last for years.  :good

I did, first thing.  That is very sanitary and shows attention to detail... he done good.  :good

As far as the soldering goes.  First, most automotive wire is not tinned, so you need to make sure you get that done properly.  If the wire isn't fully tinned, when you go to solder the connection, most of it will flow into the wire and you'll end up with a weak joint.

Assuming that the wire get's prepped and tinned correctly, when you solder the connection, while the solder is still molten, the wire and the terminal must not be moved.  If either half moves, you end up with a disturbed joint, and again it will be weak and/or create a resistance at that point.

And finally, if you don't use enough heat, either through being in a hurry or not using a big enough iron, the solder won't flow properly and you'll end up with a cystilzed joint and that won't help things either.

As far as knowing how to solder right that is absolutely correct a cold solder joint will ruin the whole thing. Before I became an Engineer I was a Technician and most of my work was assembling wiring harnesses and circuit boards. So I have slung my share of solder.  :comp

So is my 14 ga wire going to work for my temp sensor……..   :D

The biggest area I saw as a weak point with the crimp contacts, was that for my installation I needed to bring two wires into on connector for the power and ground (daisy chain) when the connector was designed for one contact. In my old wiring harness these joints were coming apart. The contacts were not designed for this so I wasn’t really interested in using them that way.

With the solder contacts it made it much easier to bring two into one contact. My biggest goal with my boat was to have a true “Turn Key Boat” I want everything to work all the time. So that is what I am striving for…. Reliability.  :good

Well, that depends, how many amps are you pulling on that temp. sending unit??? :D
