I've still got some rectangle port heads and all the accessories (pretty new valves, springs, retainers, guide plates) sitting in my garage. Â They came off the yellow boat and it was running good when I pulled them. They're 106cc closed chamber heads.

I'm just trying to be a nice guy and help a fellow boater. Â The Desert Heat boat has aluminum Edelbrocks on it and runs great, no problems there. Â The yellow boat has rectangles on it, big Merlins, and it runs great too, that's where these heads came from. Â I was just offering you a solution that would help you steer away from buying more broke down crap and get you back on the water before the turn of the century.
Seems to me you stay under 600, hell, even 6 rpm for the most part. Â

Quote (AZKC @ Jan. 30 2005,1:37 pm) | The other one is in great shape and its match ported 049 with big valves and triple springs. Now how hard is it to use one of my good 049's that I have and match port it to match. Also I want to ID the springs that came with them they are all in good shape. They have some orange stripe marking and they are triple springs like I said before. |
It's no big deal to match them it just takes time. I use one of these $3.50 dividers or you can make thin cardboard disks of the ports and grind the head to match, use the gasket to match the entry!. From the pic it don't look like they were hogged out though just a clean up and blend the sharp edges!..
As far as the springs goes, there's only one way to find out what you have and what shape they are in and that is to use a spring tester to measure spring pressure, first to see if they are all equal, second to see if they are compatible with your cam!. Unless you have a spring tester, I'd take the whole pile and take them to Larry and let him check them and come up with a good set. This is the only way to find out what you have. You don't know the history of them, if the motor got parked for long periods at a time without backing off the valves they don't last long, when springs are compressed they lose tention pretty quick!..

Yeah I figured taking the springs to a machine shop would be a good idea to see if they are still in good shape. Yeah the intakes were port matched and smoothed no real heavy grinding done to them. They really didn't do much to the exhaust ports though, smoothed a little but not gasket matched. The calipers look like stuff we used in wood shop But the cutting disc templates sounds like a plan what do ya think one every 1/2" or so

Straight from Hotboat:
Heads are casting # 3964291. I'm looking to get $250 out of them complete.
They might have 6 trips on them since I ran through them all, including new guides. They're all torn apart now and you'll need new seals, but other than that, a little paint to pretty them up and they'll be good to go.
396 on hotboat had them checked out and found some small cracks somewhere in a valve bowl, and didn't want them. I knocked $100 off of what I sold them to him for because of that. I didn't see anything and my boss who is a big motorhead looked at them and didn't see anything, but said it's common on BBC heads and won't hurt anything.

Believe it or not those calipers are damn accurate, you can go an 1/8' at a time if you want. But yeah making discs work good, 3/8" to a 1/2" apart will work just fine!..
