Who makes the best???
I need to order my piston rings on Monday and I was wondering, what eveyone's favorite is. I know alot of the engine kits you buy have Speed Pro (ie TRW) plasma moly rings.
I was looking at Total Seal conventional rings, a little more spendy, but I've heard good things about them. The gapless rings seem like snake oil to me, and I don't want to spend 200.00 on rings, so I'm stearing away from that course of action.
And while we're here. I'm ordering Cleavite bearings as well. They only make a couple series for the FE's. The engine had P series in it, and that is what I'm going to order. Can anyone explain the different Cleavite series?? You read the description and they are all for "High reving, high power" engines...lol... than why so many? I realize that each has it's own materials they are made out of. Just for my info more than anything else.

I always use SpeedPro moly file to fit rings for N/A motors, have never had a problem with them. The gapless is a waste for everyday stuff but if you want the max comp and if you run a blown motor that's the way I would go!..
Bearings are made for different applications. The "P" series is the general everyday bearing, the "H" series is if you have a large radii on the journals and the have a medium level eccentricity and high crush capacity and without flash plating for better seating!.. The "V" series is based on the Vandervel bearing which has a Tri-Metal construction, they will not flake and have a very high fatigue strengh and will not collapse under severe use and heat. The Indy guys would use those!..
Some interesting info on bearings, type "bearings" in the search!.

You're welcome, when you get the block honed make sure you tell them what type of ring you're using!.

I did... actually Larry asked. Â Â
I knew I was going to use a moly ring. Â |
Yeah Larry would, any GOOD machine shop will ask but a lot of them won't bother to ask and just do it the way they want to do it, then the guy puts the motor together(just assembles it, he don't know how to build one)and fires it up and the rings don't seat, of course he then blames the ring because he don't know any better and that sucks, should be a law against that!.

Actually, it was running so good and I wanted it to run even better so I upgraded parts. Decided while I was in there that I'd fix something that was a minor annoyance.
Put new heads on it, new intake, bigger carb, banderlog valve, ditched the OT headers as I heard that the through transoms were good for 5 mph, just stuff like that.
Nothing was wrong. I took it apart and it was running great. Guess you wouldn't know anything about that huh???
