Well folks, heres the drill, and I need some solid advice. My 454 BBC that is in my 19" Bahner is basically shot. I hydrolocked the #8 cylinder last summer, and have been replacing one thing after another to get it back in shape (so far, new cam, lifters, rods, rockers, valves). I have found that the #8 connecting rod is bent, there is a bunch of metal debris in the pan, and the cylinder wall may be scored, so needless to say, I would be looking at a lot of work and $$$ to get this thing up and running. At the very minimum, a complete tear down of the motor to hot-tank the block, new rods, MAYBE a new crankshaft, and while your in there, the pistons and rings may as well be replaced since they were new in 1990. This is an awful lot of $$$ to invest in a 1976 block, so I have decided to have a new motor built altogether. Here is my question: 1) Who is reliable on the west coast that has a good reputation for building reliable turnkey motors? So far, I have contacted Beck Racing engines, and Nelson Racing engines, (both in SoCal). Nelson quoted me a price of $14,000, and I have not heard back from BRE yet. What I am looking for is a BBC, naturally aspirated, single carb setup that puts out 650-700 hp. Since I only have (2) 8 gallon tanks in the boat, fuel consumption is a concern. Also, I want it to run on no more than 91 octane. Those are my requirements, and any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. -DD
