Currently on my boat I have a quadra-jet???
I'm looking to upgrade to a Holly 800.
This was recomended to me.  I really don't know too much about engines.  My question is Will a new carb help performance at all and is Holly a good brand?  Is there any other makers I should look into?
Thanks.

Oh yeah the engine is a moarien power 454.

Something wrong with the Quadrajet :confused they are a pretty good carb when they are working right. What is the part number of the Holley your looking at? Also make sure your manifold will accept a Holley carb unless your getting the Quadrajet replacement carb.  ;)

nothing is wrong with the quadrajet, I'm just looking to increase performance a little.  The part number of the Holly is 0-84022 it is not the replacement.  The replacement is the 650 part number 0-80552.

Quadrajunk???  As KC said, they're great carbs when they're working right.  Are you running a jet or an I/O?

I've got an 850 Holley double pumper sitting in my garage right now that I'm not doing anything with as I jumped up to a 1050 Dominator.   :D

We need some more information before we can really start making recomendations.  Heads, intake, exhaust, drive (jet or i/o).  Jumping from a 650 to an 850 could end up with the engine falling on its' face if that's all you change.   :cool

If you jump to the 800/850's remember your fuel consumption will increase quite a bit. You'll notice some performance gains and your wallet will be thinner quicker also :D

The drive is a jet.  I'm not really sure about the heads and the exhaust all I know is that everything is stock.

You might lose a little drivability with an 800 on a pretty stock motor. You'll pick up some top end power but you might be a little rich on the lower end off idle it might stumble a bit. If you do alot of idling around(like in the channel or no wake zones) a smaller carb might be better for you.

Definatly be carefull going up to high on a stock 454 jet.  My old jet had a 750 and I dropped a leaned out 870 on it and it bogged out pretty bad off of the line. I increased the gap and did some ignition work, Big ass coil and 6al. And it helped alot. Just dont think that a bigger carb is the one shot soulution to more HP.  As Jordy said you have to match the heads, intake, cam, etc to get real gains...

Not saying it would stall but your dumping alot of fuel into a pretty stock motor. You could do some jetting on the carb to help. I'm going to ck out the Holley number to see which one it is :stupid

And you said do do :laugh

I don't find that number on a quick look around but here's a link to Holleys site and some good basic carb stuff

Ok, if you have a bone stock 454 and logs for exhaust, put a 3310-1 on it, you'll get performance and smoothe operation and it won't kill you on gas, if you're keeping the stock manifold you'll have to use an adaptor for the 4150 bolt pattern!. I would recommend getting rid of the Quadrajunk manifold and putting on a Performer RPM or equivilant, that makes a good package and it will wake it up quite a bit and still be like stock!.. :good

I think if I ever change carbs on mine, I will take a serious look at a Carter Carb as a replacement.

Carrera, I love carter because the are easy to maintain and run them on the street but,we changed one on my cusins 89 ultra jet and hated it. We have the holly rebuilt at the beginning of every season but it's what works best. We lost all top end on a stock 330 horse 454.

The Carter is a good reliable carb but it is not a performance piece without a lot of modifications which to me is not worth the hassle, the Holley is a performance carb right out of the box and way more simple to tune!.. :good
