One thing that someone is going to get a call about is the freeze plugs.  They didn't get pulled when the block got cleaned so my water jacket is full of crap.  Every time I rolll the engine over, more crap falls out.

I punched them out, but I'm going to be giving someone a call on Monday to see what we can do about this.

First off, what restrictors??? :stupid  :stupid I see two oil galley plugs, one arrow points to a plug, the other one to one of the cam thrust plate bolt holes!.. Did you just put those core plugs in????? (I bet I know the answer to that)..

Now before you make an ass of yourself, :laugh  you were supposed to take those freeze plugs out, no machine shop will unless you want them to and they will charge you to do it. It's up to you to have it all ready for them, it should be stripped completely when you take it in along with all your measurements for machining!.. :)  :D

No, it came from the machine shop just like you see it.

That's my question... where do the restrictors go???   :stupid Everyone is telling me that I should install restrictors since I'm using a solid cam, but no one is pointing me where they need to go.  Or is it like I did on my Olds, and I need to install restricotors above the main bearings??

It's not a big deal about the freeze plugs... but it was put on the work order to intall new ones.  After I sat down and looked real close, I never was charged for them, so they will probably tell me tuff... I'll just have to spend more time cleaning is all...

That's what I thought, :( and I bet I see cam bearings in the block too huh???. Well if you want your bearings to last more than 5 minutes, you're going to have to strip it, pull all those core plugs(you're supposed to do that before you take it in) and knock out the cam bearings and clean the block. You need to run a brush thru all the oil galleys because they are full of shit, and garonteed there's shit behind the cam bearings, that's a normal automatic thing that you do when you get it back from a machine shop!..

Ok I gotcha, whoever you're talking to don't know what they're talking about. You don't put restrictors in, you block off the lifter passages and to do that, you pop the press plugs on the top galley and then drill and tap the inner holes for pipe plugs, actually you should do it to all the core plugs, those press deals do fall out occasionally=massive oil leak, :laugh You can put restrictors on the top end if you want but that's way down the line!..

They didn't put freeze plugs in because you didn't take the old ones out, but they should have called and asked if you wanted them to pull the old ones and put new ones in, they would have charged you for it too!.. :)

OK, the oil passages have threaded plugs in them, I'll go take a pic of it... stanby...

Here's the rear galley on the drivers side.  That plug is threaded.

And now the passanger side.  The rear plug (on the right) is threaded, while the front one is pressed.

Hmmm, deceiving they looked like pressed in ones from the pic, anyhow they all should be tapped for pipe plugs. The off shoots at the rear of the block is where you install the plugs to block off the lifter galleys!.. :)

OK, that answers one question.  :good

I think my confusion came from hearing people say that I can restrict the oil to the lifters... I was hearing "install restrictors (like I did on the Olds)" not, "plug off the galleys"... you don't learn if you don't ask.. right?? :D

The only plugs that are threaded are on the off-shoots.  The others are all pressed.

Now I've got to go find my cam bearing knocker-outer and get busy cleaning... :D

Yep the only way to learn is to ask! :good Now take out those plugs and down inside you drill and tap for plugs, that's what blocks off the galleys!.. You don't restrict oil to the lifters, you restrict oil from going up into the valve covers, there's two different ways to do that but that's later down the road if you want to do that. Right now you need to take out every plug you can find and the cam bearings!. BTW, be careful taking the bearings out, if they come out hard you can reuse them!.. :good

OK, an update.  :rolleyes

I bought a cam bearing installer, knocked the bearings out and cleaned the block up.  :good

All the oil galley holes have been tapped for pipe plugs.  :good

I mic-ed all the main and rod journals and measured my bearing clearances and they are perfect.   :good

Checked all the rings, filled the ones I needed, and started putting the engine together.  :good

Got the crank in and the #1 piston installed, found top dead center and went to stab the cam...  :banghead

One of the cam bearing is to small.  :beat  I was able to get the cam installed by using a little persuasion, but then the cam wouldn't turn freely.  I pulled the cam back out and took a look around.  All the cam bearings but one have a slight film of molly lube on them, the offending bearing is shiny like a new penny... waaaaaay to tight I would say.

I ordered a new set of cam bearings today, so hopefully this weekend I can get the bottom end of this beast completed.  :rolleyes

I'm going to take it out and play with it this evening... I might even get around to messing with the cam bearings too...  :eek :D

Plan on mic-ing it just to see how much different it is.  :stupid

Did you check the bearing ID to the cam????, is that bearing shiny all the way around?, bet it ain't and the new one will do the same!.. This is very common with those, the bore is slightly out of alignment all you needed to do is hone it slightly and if the cam does go in and you can turn it with only a slight interferance, no biggie it will wear in as soon as you fire it!.. If you looked at the old one out of that bore, bet there would be a difference in the wear pattern on that one compared to the others!.. :)

I knocked the bearing out last night, I think I dorked it a little when I drove it in...  :rolleyes

Since new bearing are only 20.00 or so, I'll be sure to be a little more carefull pounding them in this time... :D

The big purple truck dropped off the new bearings and other parts yesterday.

I spent last evening removing and replacing the cam bearings, now the cam fits...  :jumpie  :good

So, the crank is re-installed, the cam is stabbed and number 1 piston is sitting patiently on top dead center.  I've got to get a few more 1/4" NPT plugs and I'll be good to go and on the my way to getting the bottom end finished this weekend.

I'll give it tell next Friday.  If someone hasn't bought the whole package by then, I'll strip it down that weekend and start selling parts.  :alien
