Quote (AZKC @ May 06 2005,10:40 am) | Which one did you copy paste from HB or Dougs  How the hell do ya measure the dome and can I not match the weight to one of the other piston rod assmblies
How do ya tell if its cast or forged?
Doesn't the GM make it OEM? |
Ok just took another look, you don't have a dome, never seen those before, they may be a truck piston That is cast for sure but the easy way to tell is a cast piston has a metal support in the casting aroung the wrist pin, a forged don't, not to mention a cast piston looks like shit, You can match the weight but you will have to take a piston off one of the other rods to do that!.. I'd take one over to Larry and see if he knows what it is, he deals with that stuff on a daily basis, I'm sure he's seen those before, I just use normal stuff!. I know what I would do though!..

What, you don't have a graduated cylinder and plate to do a CC measurment??? Â
Since they are flat tops, I wouldn't think that the valve reliefs are more than a few CC's worth of volume. |
I was just going to use Saran Wrap and a measuring cup that should get me close  |
Damn wish I could afford all that high tech equipment!..

Quote (AZKC @ May 06 2005,11:26 am) | Got a part number from one of our parts suppliers, just need to figure out if its cast or forged, the number crossed to either or Forged was a L2377F Cast is a H661CP . |
The compression height is probably the same but I bet the configuration won't be!..

I remember those steel plates from the last motor I junked they are still laying in the bottom of the Milidon pan |
Yep, those would be cast pistons!.

Quote (AZKC @ May 06 2005,12:31 pm) | Well it will have one valve relief for sure by description. Trying to locate one locally to compare. |
Ya know, if you go to one of those "fleet" rebuilder places I bet they would have them on the shelf, just thought of that!..

Quote (AZKC @ May 06 2005,1:07 pm) | This is a cast piston out of the 40 over block. The piston I'm chasing doesn't seem to be similar.
|
Yep that is cast, you can also tell by the casting lines!.. The one you're looking for is from a different MFG that's why it don't look the same!..

Quote (AZKC @ May 06 2005,1:00 pm) | I went out and looked at the piston and I see some sort of plate but it runs parallel to the ring lands right about at the oil ring area. I don't see anything around the wrist pin area. I seem to remember those metal plates having a hole or round part that went around the wrist pin |
Different MFG's have different ideas on how to make stuff!..

Yeah, the top ain't going to look like this!. |
Hey Art is that a pic of one of Kevins pistons? That doesn't even look like a true flat top.It looks like it has a small dish.If so he needs to make sure he gets the same cc dish. |
Yep it does have a dish!.
