I trashed my 454 because of an oiling problem, all the machine works done and parts are here. I'm going to start assembly after New Years.

I'm going to be adding a new intake, carb and heads, plus installing an MSD Distributor and box. Maybe upgrade the cam too.

Are you going to show us how to use every part as opposed to ending up with a coffee can full of parts when you're supposedly all finished? :confused  :rotflmao

Funny thing is I'm going to have a bucket full of left overs. Replacing most of the hardware with stainless :) as long as I dont end up with an extra piston it will work out :laugh

Miller do you put it together yourself, and are you upgrading or just rebuilding?

I haven't decided yet if I want to assemble the whole thing or have them assemble the short block for me.

I am upgrading and after talking to the machinist I ended up upgrading more than I planned. :rolleys But I should have as strong engine when I am done.

I am building a single carb 582 chev with a shot of NOS. The block will be back from the machine shop today or Monday and I should have the shortblock done by the weekend. Then I will be waiting on parts. Should make my deckboat a real sleeper :sleep

Yea I thought I would get some new pistons and a cam. Now its new pistons, new cam/lifters, new valve springs, new valves, new timing chain, new oil pump, bla, bla, bla. Well I guess it will be a pretty nice motor when I am done.

The weedwacker melted a piston last August and I just got the motor back together.  'Course it got the big rods, lightweight flywheel, ported exhaust chest, all sleeves, ported rod slots and finger ports...should run better than ever.

There are some pics of the buildup and running in:  New pics & vids

If you need a boat to break that bad boy in with, I'll volunteer my boat for the project and then spend the season breaking it in right as you know you shouldn't rush these things.

Sounds like a bitchin' motor John.  And there is nothing better than a nice sleeper boat.   :D

It was recently overhauled, although for some reason I'm thinking the rings didn't seat right or something along those lines as I'm getting some oil blown out of the breathers.  I'd like to run though it and re-ring it, with Total Seals like I originally wanted to do and see what happens.  Other than that I've just been working on getting the carb dialed in as it's still going flat up top, like it's running out of fuel.  I went from a 7.5:1 compression motor to around a 10:1 so it's a matter of playing with the carb and getting it all set up.  I'm just taking a break from messing with it right now.  I am thinking sometime in the future of either looking more into that 572 crate motor that Chevy is going to be putting out, or building some n/a big displacement sleeper motor for it.  Or I could go an entirely different route and throw an 8-71 on top of a motor and be done with it.  I kinda like the sleeper method though.  :D

Well that about sums it up. Doesn`t sound like you are to far away from working out the bugs. If you need any help let me know. The crate motor deal could work out well. I got rid of my blower it worked very well but I drive my boat alot and fuel was a killer. I have a good friend who does all my motor stuff he is very good so if you ever need some work he can help you out at a good price. He just did a motor for Jetboatguru and that thing kicks ass.
