I replaced my Mallory dual point distributor with a new MSD Billet drop-in unit on my 454 BBC. Im getting a few miles more per gallon and she starts like a dream now. First hit every time. Will pay for itself in one season.

Quote (tunamaster @ July 29 2005,12:56 pm) | I'm not to hip on engines, what is this? HEI with a performance kit installed |
The H.E.I.(High Energy Ignition)is an OEM ignition that came out in 74 on GM products and is one of the most reliable units out there. The draw back is that they were made for the daily driver and not for performance and high rpm's, but with an aftermarket module and coil, it's as good as anything out there for reliability, and a hell of a lot cheaper!.. The MSD is a good ignition "WHEN" it works, and sometimes that's not too often and there is no warning, see more boats being towed in because of that!. I wouldn't put that POS on anything even if it was free!..

I've an Accel HEI with super coil and it's been reliable, I still need to lock it out though.

Why would you lock it out?, that just tears up starters and kills batteries!..

Looks like a bone stocker and if it came with the crate deal it is, well crap that's a little high think I'll pass thanks anyhow!. Probably a good idea to keep it with you on the boat though with that MSD junk, could be a life saver one day!.

Quote (Sleek-Jet @ Aug. 08 2005,3:25 pm) | The problem with MSD's is that they are very criticle of quality of connections and grounds... both of which are hard to come by and maintain in boat.
If I were to run an MSD in a boat, I would get one of their ready to run distributors so when the box craps out, you can still get back to the ramp. |
They still take a shit regardless, and why have all that stuff when you can keep it simple with one reliable piece, not to mention saving a bunch of money!..

Quote (stingray @ Aug. 08 2005,3:19 pm) | Quote (tunamaster @ July 29 2005,10:34 am) | I was wondering if an MSD ignition would help with the performance of my boat. Â I was told it would, I just want to make sure before I spend the $300. The one I found was MSD 6M-2. Thanks for your help. |
I just got off the phone with a buddy sitting in a shop in havi. witha dead boat due to no spark.MSD failed, he was towed in and trying to get it replaced. It sounds like a tricked out hei would be a better choice |
Yep tipical scenario, seen a lot of that. And a friend of mine once lost two races because of those, went all the way to the finals and on the last pass it took a shit half ways, the last time he literally took it off and tossed it into the river!..
