Shoe and Ride Plate. The shoe seals off a portion of the intake to catch and force the water into the impeller rather than go flying by. Ride plate adjust the boats attitude (angle) while under power.
How close am I?

Lifting the back of the boat out of the water has its limits I would guess, you wouldn't want to cavitate the pump. Is that where intake loaders come into play?

It is not going to give a ton of lift, the loader helps but the ride plate which was first called a cavitation plate is supposed to keep the pump from sucking air in the back. But now has a dual purpose.
