Ahh yes, that wouldn't be the first time that's ever happened, I've never done it but came close due to using junk keys, the most I've done was shear the key half ways!.. But that is caused by junk keys or the prop don't fit the shaft or both, a lot of people don't check that!.. You won't know if they're junk until you get the prop off, I've seen that done and no dammage but there could be some dammage??... I made a tool that I keep with me just for that, I took a chunk of steel round stock and bored it out and use it as a slide hammer, I set the end of the propshaft on a chunk of aluminum or wood and use a thick washer against the hub and give it a good whack, usually it pops right off because it's still on a taper!..
BTW, what kind of boat does he have??..

Quote (MrCord @ Mar. 14 2006,2:57 pm) | Quote (stingray @ Mar. 14 2006,2:38 pm) | I guess he got a mild vibration,I thought he had fixed it untill I got to the river and see the prop nut missing  Now it's at the river,no tools. He says run it the season and fix it next winter  It's not my boat so, Do what you want. |
Am I getting this right.....
No prop nut... And a prop just jammed on there...
Yikes...  I dont want to be a wakeboarder in the water when he hits reverse  |
I have a rosebud tip, and we tried some heat, but on the boat all that heat rises to the bottom of the boat, on the gelcoat. this has turned near 1/4 turn, I suspect two things, a weak key and not enough torque on the nut causing the prop to get a running start at the key shearing it off.
Agian all I can do is give advice. If he wants to run it this season we will see. I've ridden in it and didn't feel a vibration, but it's not mine. no one nows there boat better than the owner.

I'll lay odds that the key didn't fit right and the prop didn't go all the way on, even though the nut was tight the prop was still loose because it didn't seat on the taper, and that will shear a key real quick!.. I swear some people shouldn't be allowed to have boats, let alone work on them!..

yep, all I can give is advice   so we will see how bad it is next year? mine is all good though  |
If it's stuck on there that bad, there's probably metal transfer and unless he's got a ton of power and hammers the shit out of it, it probably won't move!.... Btw, what kind of boat is it????..

That's what I'm thinking, I have had Jet Ski fly wheels do that, and it kills both parts, but they quit running because of timing issues. low grade alum. light weight. I learned my lesson on that crap
The ski boat with the Chevy Big Block.

I was tinkering with my boat the other weekend and found out that I can't remove my prop either. However I never took it off, so its been on there for 3years. I'll just let the company who does the annual service on my boat take the prop off and check it out.
That way I have them to blame if anything goes wrong.
