Ok, so I've been off the page for a while trying to figure some stuff out and attending to some other things. I've finally went through my boat and attended to the motor and while doing so, I had some questions with the driveline assembly and a vibration in the driveshaft. This is my first v-drive and before owning this one, I've never even been in or close enough to one to hear it operate. so my question is the oil system of the gear housing and how it works. I found about four hoses that look like two run water and two run oil from the  block? :stupid  bare with me here guys as I feel silly asking some of these questions. :bowdown here's a pic of what I'm working with here hopefully it helps. Oh yeah, where can i get a rpm cord for this as it was rigged on there with some bailing wire when i bout it.

thanks guys! :D

Looks like a paralel drive, not a v-drive!. :stupid Anyhow, that is a gearbox just like a rear end in a vehicle and it needs gear oil not engine oil, you need to change that if you want it to live!.... Are you sure the vibration is coming from the driveshaft???(are all bolts tight??), does it vibrate out of gear if you rev the motor??, probably not!. :stupid  It's probably the propshaft, check the strut bushings they're more than likely all worn out, also the prop could be off balance if it's dinged up!... Let's see a pic of the plumbing from the other side of the drive!.. :stupid

I'll get on the picks of the plumbing from the other side and it vibrates when the prop is out of gear so it does it while idleing and when you rev it. I'll get several pics up tonight after work. thanks.

Ok one more test, undo the driveshaft off the motor(only)and fire up the motor, if it vibrates then it's the motor out of balance, if no vibration then you need to take the driveshaft to a driveline service and have it balanced!.. Usually it won't vibrate at idle though!.. :stupid  How are the bearings in that drive??... :stupid

So this morning I went out to start it up and get a better idea of where the vibration was coming from and it sounds like it's right at the U-joints now I'm sure there's going to be some sound coming from this area being that it's onboard right next to you but how much is too much?  I think my next step is to pull out and inspect the U-joints. sorry about the vibration description I gave earlier, it probobly was'nt detailed enough. :beat  I should have those pics posted today after work.

Bad u-joints is some scary stuff, hope you have a driveline cover!. :eek Those are easy enough to check, just take a big screw driver and pry them and see if there's any slop??. You still need to check everything else though!.. :good

ok, so after doing some of my homework and finding out that hall craft parts in las vegas just don't exist, I found the reason for my vibration. I removed the entire housing from both shafts and removed the housing part (gear selector area) of the prop shaft and took out the seal and bearings and came to find out that the bearings are shot! :banghead  now I went to napa and found a matchup that replaced the old one perfectly but the seal on the other hand is not even made anymore. The seal ring part is made of a felt like material and it was just shot. While doing the repairs, I noticed the oil coming out was a nasty honey mustard looking color. :puke  Has anyone ever seen this? I'm putting it all back together  today once the seal I ordered from chicago rawhide comes in.  thanks for all your help guys. :bowdown

First of all, Hallcraft never was in Vegas they were in Gardena, Ca many moons ago and they have been long gone for a long time, but you can get any part you need for it from Tom Bentley, he bought out the Hallcraft biz and he makes all the stuff for it, give him a call he's a great guy and he'll take care of ya!.. For bearings, any bearing supply house handles those no problem it's common stuff!.... That oil is probably original and it's shot and needs to be replaced!...

Menkens!

Ok, so I knew that Hall Craft was in Ca being that I'm a native but I never would have thought that here in Vegas it would be so hard to find someone who knew where to get or how to find Hall Craft parts! :angry   but I guess thats why I'm here right? :good So to be real honest with you, up until i read this reply this morning, I was thinking of getting rid of my stevens after this summer for  another boat with a newer drive system. But now with the knowledge I've aquired from GFR I feel like my boat project has reached a whole new level of capability :jumpie  so with the seals and bearings, I put a new sealed bearing and new chicago rawhide output shaft rubber lip seal on the gear housing, cleaned out the entire gear housing, replaced the oil and assembled it back together, hooked up the garden hose to the motor and started it up and  :love  it was an awsome feeling after about 25 minutes of continuous running and not a drop of oil, not a sign of vibration in sight! So now all I have to do is put in the seats my buddies and i have pre-cut and make an honest attempt at upohlstry and we should be on the water by next weekend. So I know i said I would post more pictures but I can't find my usb cable to do so. As soon as I find it I'll post some up and let you guys see the boat in action. thanks a bunch. I never would have even had a clue or known where to begin with you guys.

I got two of 'em, but my buddy has two v-drives and if my crystal ball is working properly I may get a piece of the action on one (unless he sells it) :cool

Congrats, glad you got it squared away!.. :good  :beer  Actually because Hallcraft has been gone for so long, unless you talk to someone from back in the day no one has even heard of Hallcraft anymore!.. There's nothing wrong with a Stevens, (in fact I wish I could find my old one) any boat can get discusting when things go bad, it's no different than a car if you don't maintain it the thing will go to shit, apparently that's the case with yours. My first boat(Stevens) was the same way when I bought it, the first summer I had it the thing never ran more than 15-20 minutes anytime I took it out. That got taken cared of real quick that winter!..... :angry  if you start having trouble with your paralel drive or you want to up the power a bit, I have a Hallcraft split case v-drive that will work real good in your boat, might want to keep it in mind!.. :good

ok, so this weekend was the first time that I took her out on the water and i gotta say that i was impressed on the take off and the top speed. she only has a 327 with a  600 cfm edlebrock carb and the m8 through transom headers but i love the sound and response compared to my old jet. the only complaint i have is the terrible ride! i had a sleek craft that rode like a dream for my first boat and now i think it made my first flat bottom experience sour :puke   so i'm thinking of selling her to go back to a jet or even an outboard. what do you guys think?

Flat Bottoms were'nt known for thier smooth ride. They are a nice water boat..... But they are fun!! You may want to find a v-bottom with a v-drive.

Like he said, flats are not a boat for ocean type water, a 6-8" chop without rollers and swells are fine anything else is beyond the design of a flat. Take it out in decent water and you'll find out it can be a blast. If you want to run in the shit you need a v-bottom like a Schiada, Raysoncraft, Howard to name a few, those are made for rough water and will give you a nice ride, and NOT eat up the gas!..

First off, you don't want reverse in a flat they don't steer, seen  quite a few sink too just have to learn how to drive one, no biggie!... You can find split cases on e-bay quite often between $400-$600, but some need rebuilding!. I have a good Hallcraft that I'll be selling if I ever get a chance to put the damn thing together!.. :rolleyes  :laugh
