Looks like a paralel drive, not a v-drive!. Anyhow, that is a gearbox just like a rear end in a vehicle and it needs gear oil not engine oil, you need to change that if you want it to live!.... Are you sure the vibration is coming from the driveshaft???(are all bolts tight??), does it vibrate out of gear if you rev the motor??, probably not!. Â It's probably the propshaft, check the strut bushings they're more than likely all worn out, also the prop could be off balance if it's dinged up!... Let's see a pic of the plumbing from the other side of the drive!..

Quote (ROGERP83 @ April 17 2006,6:09 am) | I'll get on the picks of the plumbing from the other side and it vibrates when the prop is out of gear so it does it while idleing and when you rev it. I'll get several pics up tonight after work. thanks. |
Ok one more test, undo the driveshaft off the motor(only)and fire up the motor, if it vibrates then it's the motor out of balance, if no vibration then you need to take the driveshaft to a driveline service and have it balanced!.. Usually it won't vibrate at idle though!.. How are the bearings in that drive??...

Bad u-joints is some scary stuff, hope you have a driveline cover!. Those are easy enough to check, just take a big screw driver and pry them and see if there's any slop??. You still need to check everything else though!..

First of all, Hallcraft never was in Vegas they were in Gardena, Ca many moons ago and they have been long gone for a long time, but you can get any part you need for it from Tom Bentley, he bought out the Hallcraft biz and he makes all the stuff for it, give him a call he's a great guy and he'll take care of ya!.. For bearings, any bearing supply house handles those no problem it's common stuff!.... That oil is probably original and it's shot and needs to be replaced!...

Quote (ROGERP83 @ May 12 2006,9:10 am) | Ok, so I knew that Hall Craft was in Ca being that I'm a native but I never would have thought that here in Vegas it would be so hard to find someone who knew where to get or how to find Hall Craft parts!  but I guess thats why I'm here right? So to be real honest with you, up until i read this reply this morning, I was thinking of getting rid of my stevens after this summer for  another boat with a newer drive system. But now with the knowledge I've aquired from GFR I feel like my boat project has reached a whole new level of capability  so with the seals and bearings, I put a new sealed bearing and new chicago rawhide output shaft rubber lip seal on the gear housing, cleaned out the entire gear housing, replaced the oil and assembled it back together, hooked up the garden hose to the motor and started it up and   it was an awsome feeling after about 25 minutes of continuous running and not a drop of oil, not a sign of vibration in sight! So now all I have to do is put in the seats my buddies and i have pre-cut and make an honest attempt at upohlstry and we should be on the water by next weekend. So I know i said I would post more pictures but I can't find my usb cable to do so. As soon as I find it I'll post some up and let you guys see the boat in action. thanks a bunch. I never would have even had a clue or known where to begin with you guys.

Congrats, glad you got it squared away!.. Â Â Actually because Hallcraft has been gone for so long, unless you talk to someone from back in the day no one has even heard of Hallcraft anymore!.. There's nothing wrong with a Stevens, (in fact I wish I could find my old one) any boat can get discusting when things go bad, it's no different than a car if you don't maintain it the thing will go to shit, apparently that's the case with yours. My first boat(Stevens) was the same way when I bought it, the first summer I had it the thing never ran more than 15-20 minutes anytime I took it out. That got taken cared of real quick that winter!..... if you start having trouble with your paralel drive or you want to up the power a bit, I have a Hallcraft split case v-drive that will work real good in your boat, might want to keep it in mind!..

I got two of 'em, but my buddy has two v-drives and if my crystal ball is working properly I may get a piece of the action on one (unless he sells it) |
Cool, what kind of boats your buddy got???..

Like he said, flats are not a boat for ocean type water, a 6-8" chop without rollers and swells are fine anything else is beyond the design of a flat. Take it out in decent water and you'll find out it can be a blast. If you want to run in the shit you need a v-bottom like a Schiada, Raysoncraft, Howard to name a few, those are made for rough water and will give you a nice ride, and NOT eat up the gas!..

First off, you don't want reverse in a flat they don't steer, seen quite a few sink too just have to learn how to drive one, no biggie!... You can find split cases on e-bay quite often between $400-$600, but some need rebuilding!. I have a good Hallcraft that I'll be selling if I ever get a chance to put the damn thing together!..
