I'm thinking about picking up a second prop for my 23' Commander. It has a 454MPI pushing her and currently has a 4 blade 23p prop on that is pretty dinged up. My plan is to pull this one off and get it tuned and in the mean time buy a second prop.

Any thoughts on a second prop? I was thinking about a 3 blade for better top end and fuel economy when it's just the ol' lady and me. Put on the 4 blade when I got the kids and we're gonna pull them around.

Give me your two cents...

I have a 23pitch prop for a Volvo Penta.
What kind of drive do you have on it?

I'm not really sure because no one has been able to give me a straight answer on were she should run at. I usually cruise at around 4K rpm, but have had her to 5K and there is room to spare...

Does that answer your question?  :confused

If you can find a 23-3 blade mirage to borrow, I'd try that first. I think that the limiters are set about 5050rpms  on most 454s. If it pulls that too esasily, you may want to try a 25, but I think that may be too big.

Thanks CE. The Mirage is exactly the one I was thinking about. Is my thought process on the benifits between the two accurate? There was a thread on HB that had be believing the oposite to be true. Friggin internet.  :stupid

How does one go about "borrowing" a prop? Will the dealer let me "try a couple out"? Time to pick up the phone I guess...

I had no idea that there was a rev limiter on the engine, guess I'll have to find out for myself.  :D

I run a 21 Mirage 3 blade most of the time, but I do have a 22 Bravo 4 blade that I've run a couple of times. With either prop, the speeds are about the same, although I've never GPSd it. The handing changes with the prop as well.

I assume that the handling is better with the 4 blade prop, no?

Do you notice any difference in fuel consumption?

Do you ever tow with the Mirage? If so, how much difference between the two do you notice?
