My boat will get up and plan and top out around 4400 RPM. Â Then after a couple of minutes the RPM drop down to 3800 RPM and the engines sound like they have lost some power. Â I have a 1993 Sea Ray 300 with twin 4.3L's. Â Both engines seem to suffer equally. Â Could this be a fuel filter problem??? Â It is really weird. Â BTW... The engines run around 165 Degrees F. Â
The bottom half of my drives are needed to be changed but I do not see how this could affect engine power.

Welcome to Doug's place!. When was the last time you changed the fuel filters???, that could be the problem if they are getting plugged up, the motors are starving for fuel!. I would change that first and try it and go from there!..

I just bought the boat. I plan on changing the fuel filters this week. Hopefully that will help.

One other thing you might check is the vents on the tanks, restrictive or plugged vents will cause the same problem!..

How would I unclogg the air vent?? Would I have to tote an air compressor down to my slip? I keep the boat in the water.

If you have vent lines just pull the hose off and see if you can blow thru it, then blow thru the fitting, if one of them is plugged you know what to do, you don't want to use compressed air because if that is the problem you'll blow the crud into the tank!.. If all you have are vented caps, take it apart and clean it!..

Great Idea I will try that.

I checked out the air vent on the tank. It is fine. My fuel filters look really old. I will change those next.

The drive oil is okay. The drives are also toast from electrolosis. They will be getting changed when the parts arrive
My boat seems to have an old style fuel filter that you cannot buy anymore. I am betting the filter is an original which makes it 13 years old.

I put on the new filters and the engines did not surge any. Â Â Â Now I just need to get the bottom cleaned and reprop the thing.

The engines RPM range is somewhere between 4400 to 4800. Â The boat is under powered as it is and most of the time it never goes above 4000 because it does not always plane. Â I would think a lower pitch would help the boat get up a little better. The highest RPM I have seen is 4400rpm. So I have some room to play. Â It is a 30 ft Sea Ray with a 10' 6" Beam and it only has 4.3L V-6's. Â Â Â
I realize I did not buy a speed boat but I think it could perform better. Â

Do you know the history of those props???, if they are the original ones they came as a package to suit the motor's rpm range. Maybe the motors need to be freshened up????, if you are low on power all smaller props will do is take a load of the motors and bring the rpm's up, you will not gain any speed. Now it is possible that someone put bigger props on to lower the rpm's, but that's not a practical thing to do!.. I would research that a bit before I dumped any money on props and not gain anything!..

I just bought the boat. It does have stainless props which the factory may or may not have put on it.. After I figure out my pitch I was going to consult some long time Sea Ray mechanics to see if the props are the correct ones or not. With 760 HRs I am sure I am not at 100% power. The engine oil looks good and so do a couple of spark plugs that I looked at.

That is a good idea they should know, with that many hours they probably could use freshening up a bit though!..
