I've got lots of dings and scratches in my white gelcoat.  No problems wetsanding them out and buffing back the gel; using Meguiars ONE compound.

What about a "cream" color or green...??  Can you just wetsand it the same way and buff it out...??  What to help the bro-in-law with some detailing on his boat.

Tnks... :good

Man, I'm surprised my phone didn't ring! :stupid

Cream or green colored gelcoat can be wetsanded just like the white colored stuff! :D

Use plenty of clean water and progressively finer wet/dry paper before you use the Meguiar's. :good

Do I need to go higher on the color....??  They are just small surface scratches from sand, wakeboards, and stuff....

Glenn, do you just use 1500 or work up to it...??  :stupid

The gel on mine is pretty good , except for the light haze that it gets, so I just use the 1500. since you are trying to remove scatches, you may want to start with a rougher paper. Maybe 800-1200

Yep, 3M is good chit. Use it after the wet sanding....Depending on how bad the finish is, you may have to start with 400.
Change paper often...600, 800, 1000...I'll go up to 2000. Switch away from the heavy stuff as soon as possible, the idea is to remove as little as possible :D

And be careful around high spots and edges. Go lightly. :cool

When I first got my boat I color sanded the whole thing. Now I just use 1000 or 1500 grit paper to wet sand and then skip the messy rubbing compound and go right to a good polishing compound (starbright worked fine for me). I've found, for my gelcoat, rubbing compound is useless. I would only use it if I didn't have any fine grit paper.

I beg to differ here, if you use the right compound it works, like the 3M stuff(posted above)if you use a compound for paint it is not as agressive and it won't do the job on gel.

WTF Steve.  3M 05973 Rubbing Compund is the only thing I use on the Hallett.  Dude, you must be using the wrong shit.  Bring your boat by Hallett Dave Headquarters some weekend and let's see what we can do for the Eliminator.
