Quote (DirtySquirty @ Nov. 09 2007,7:28 am) | to get registration on an abandoned vessel ? Here's more detail. Across from the River Shack that we're finishing up there is a vacant lot. On it sits a 70's era Sleek Craft. Looks to be a 21 daycruiser. I was told by a neighbor that it used to sit further down the street and that the owner wanted to get rid of it. Somebody towed it down to the vacant lot, and there it sits. It would take alot of work just to get the trailer to roll...not to mention the resto for the boat. Just wondering what would be involved for me to take it/register it or if it could be done (AZ)?? |
All states have a process in place where you can take ownership of an abandoned boat, but as with any government deal, it is pretty long and drawn out. I did one on a boat here in VA 2 years ago. It took about 4 months all together! It involves things such as having to send registered/certified letters to the owner's last known address, one to the leanholder's business if there was a lean on it at the time of the last purchase, and running ads in the newspaper where the boat is. I know of two people who have done this in other states as well. One in TN and one in FL, and the process was almost identical. Just check with whatever gov't. agency handles boat registration in AZ. They will probably have the forms and instructions on their website. I know VA does. If you do it the right way, you won't put youself in any legal jeopardy. You'll also save yourself the time of getting the trailer to move for no reason, because you have to do most of the legwork on the ownership process before it can even be moved. Hope this is helpful! Let us know what you find out. If you like working on stuff, it would at least be worth a try!
