I have two Optima yellow top deep cycle batteries and a Perko 4 way (Off,1,2,All) switch. I want the stereo to run on both batteries while the engine is running and I want it to run on battery #2 only when I am shut down. So I guess that means I want the engine to start on 'All' or on the #1 battery or position 1 on the switch. Additionally I want both batteries to charge when I am running. Can anybody explain to me how the wiring should be hooked up? Diagrams would be very very helpful... Thank You.. Â

So I am making this more difficult than it has to be? Just take the power for the stereo directly from Battery #2 and when I am not running the boat turn the Perko switch to #2 and the stereo will be running only on the #2 battery and not draw from the #1 battery at all? And if I want both batteries to charge when running on ALL do I need to do anymore than run the - cable between them?

Quote (Carrera Elite @ Dec. 29 2008,8:54 pm) | If You Hook The Stereo Direct To The Battery, It Won't Matter Where The Swich Setting Is, It'll Just Draw off Of That Battery. My Boat Has 3 Batteries, One That Has An Isolator Hooked to it For Just The Stereo. The Sterio Battery And One Of The Others Are Hooked To One Pesition Of The Switch And One Battery On The Other. The Stereo Only Draws From The One Battery. |
I knew this would happen, I'd get confused!! Right now the two batteries are linked together I think negative post to negative post. I think I want to leave it that way so that the will both charge when I am running the boat and the Perko is at ALL. Would I be right if I had the Perko at 1 and ran it I would charge only #1 battery and the same if I had on 2, running and charging only #2 battery. If I run the stereo and amplifier power off of the #2 battery and I put the Perko on 2, will I only draw power from #2 thus leaving #1 to start the boat?

Thank you BD..That system would eliminate the Perko switch all together and do what I want it to as far charging both battery's. Of course it requires another $150 investment which is the same old story when it comes to boats !!! I sure wish I could accomplish the same thing with the Perko switch that I have...

I would definatly keep a switch in place. What switch do you have now and what positions are on it? The setup that I sent you would be the best way to go. If you already have a switch with 1,2 and both, I would keep that and add the combiner. Then run your sterio off the second battery That way you don't end up getting stuck somehwere with a dead battery.

I did research a couple years ago on this so I could add another battery in our boat. I got as far as installing the battery mount and that was it. Get the Perko 4 way switch(Off, 1,2 both) switch that has connections for the altenator on it, install the combiner, set the starter battery as one. Set the swithch to 1, all your accessories on battery 2. If you need the extra umph or a battery goes south you have the other to fall back on. There are directions for multiple engines and even for 3 batteries out there.

Quote (WATERDOG @ Dec. 30 2008,11:16 am) | Directions for 3 batt's is pretty much the same as 2 batt's as 2 batt's are combined. Postion 1 would be one stater batt and postion 2, would be 2 house batt's combined. Only reason for 3 would be for a massive amp/radio system, TV's, blenders, ect. |
Correct-o-mundo there weed hopper. Big stereo's and mass amount of electronics have a tendency of killing batteries. But I wouldn't know about them things since my stereo is couldn't kill a mouse and I don't have any electronic toys in the boat.

When I first bought my boat, told the wife first thing it was gonna need is a big stereo system. Then I turned it on. Never mind. Stock was just fine. No idea how many watts it is.

I'm needing to replace the radio. It's been workin when it wants to and sometimes it does some goofy things. I replaced the speakers last year but want just a little more (not much) umph to it. Not sure what radio I will go with at this point though. I thought about putting a small sub woofer somewhere for that umph I want.

Those subs are gonna need a lot of watts, your gonna need a amp also. I wanted a killer system. Told the guy at the stereo shop just what I wanted to do. He said 8 to 10 thousand bucks should do it. Now I really like my system.
