Could be leaking either from pump to intake and intake to hull, maybe both, fitting on the pump for water to the motor, anything that passes through the hull, several things to look for!

Actually it's better to float it, more pressure against the hull to force the leaks!..

Sure, for the big leaks you just let it fill then pull it out and get under it. much faster than filling with a hose.
