Centennial committee pull details together

By Joan M. Travis
Monday, January 14, 2008 3:42 PM MST

In a few weeks the Town of Parker begins the kick-off on the celebration of 100 years of existence. At last Thursday's Centennial Committee meeting, more details on events were presented.

The celebration will begin on Feb.16, at 2 p.m., with a community parade. Entry forms are due by Feb. 14, by 12 noon at the Parker Public Library.

Emcee for the parade will be Bert Edmonds. Ellen "Billie" Fuqua Dick will serve as parade marshal.

The parade will line up on Mohave Avenue and 9th Street, starting at 1:45 p.m. The parade will disperse near the Parker Fire Department.

Downtown activities will run from 2 to 5 p.m., on Arizona Avenue, between Joshua and Kofa avenues. The Parker Fire Department will serve a barbecue beginning at 4 p.m. The suggested donation for a plate is $5.

Also, Lickity Stitch will be selling commemorative tee-shirts for $10, in teal, white and gray. Owners Honey and Mark Paterson will donate $2 for every shirt sold to the Parker Historical Society.

In the evening a street dance will get underway, from 6 to 9 p.m., with Thad Foster and the River Rats. Other area musicians are urged to participate.

In the upcoming months a Joshua Street Mall Birthday Party for Parker will be sponsored by Chuck Baker in early May.

The annual tube float in June will have the theme "100 Years of Railroad."

The closing event sponsored by the Town will be on June 18, the real date of the town's establishment.

A birthday party in Pop Harvey Park will start at 6 p.m. Food vendors, "old timey" games will be featured. And the community can come out and partake of the giant birthday cake.

The Parker Historical Society will be publishing a Parker history book through Arcadia Publishing.

The Pioneer will be producing a centennial book available in the Feb. 6 edition.

For more information or if you would like to sponsor an event or volunteer contact Jana Ponce at the Parker Public Library, (928) 669-2622.

I'm sorry to poke fun, but I'm sure glad that's not my name.   :laugh
