The Allison is still the only Heavy Duty offered with a gas engine that I know of.

It is "Da Kine" trans. Stays cool no matter what.

It's a 5 speed, and in the "Tow Mode", 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears the torque converter locks up. You get teriffic engine brakeing in tow mode too. My daughter loves it when she's towing. Says it gives you super control of the whole rig, especially coming down into Whitewater outta Yucca Valley.

No problem towing in 5th gear.

Note in the pic, a rare on auto transmissions pan drain plug, and the spin on filter is for the solinoid fluid circuit. There is  yet another filter in the pan.
I have over 40,000 trouble free, smooth miles on mine. 8.1 gas engine.
I use my truck for heavy towing. I have a slide out trailer that weighs in at 8200 lbs. The owners manual says change the fluid every 25K  if you do hot and heavy towing,, that's me. I started to do it myself,, but my local GMC dealer had a $69 special, filters, fluid, gasket included. Crazy not to take advantage of that.

Note daughters Raptor and sons Honda quads, and fleet of go peds.
I was hoping I was outta 2 strokes forever when we sold the Merc 250Fi, but then the Go Peds came along. Note the aluminum billet chain tentioner on the red go ped, a must over stock.

The trick to go peds is to use super high quality 2 stroke oil. Suzuki cci is the best for Go peds. Believe me, I found out the hard way. All other oils gum up the carbs eventually if the goped sits for awhile because gas evaporates outta the carb and leaves oil residue behind.. The Suzuki oil reacts differently and doesn't gum up.

OK, just my 2 cents on everything.

Lets see your rides:

Nice truck, cool toys. Is it true about the gas milage on those 8.1 liter. Somewhere around 10-12 mpg.

Hey Jake, you should really look into running the Allison brand synthetic called TranSynd.  It's good stuff and will let you go 50,000 miles without worrying about a service.  By the way, I work for the Allison dealer in Phoenix so I have inside information on all the recommendations.  Just something to think about.   :stupid

It's OK to use it in their smaller trans like the World 1000?

If, so,, it's going in.

How long are these transmissions expected to last?

I used to get about 150.000 miles out of my GM turbo 400's.

Thanks for the tip,,

4L80E!!

I'll agree that the 4L80E was a killer tranny.  I got 202,000 out of the original tranny on my '94 with the 6.5 diesel.  But it's still no match for the Allison.  I like the grade braking and the extra gear.  Nothing like running 80 at 2000 rpm.   :D

Good trans...just keep it under 850-900ft-lbs of torque and you'll be ok.
