:angry The tach in my truck seems to have a mind of its own. Its a 03 Chevy 6.6 Duramax. Most of the time it reads from 2500 to 4500 even at idle. Does anyone know if there is a tach pickup or sending unit? the needle drops to zero when the key is off so its not stuck.  :banghead

Took care of that for you McCord...

Wade, doesn't the tach drive off a pully???  Might just be a loose connector under the hood.

Fock, I don't know. I've been trying to find info on it for a week. I guess I'm going to have to take it to someone, hopefully not the dealer. :beat

Just guessing here but doesn't the computer have something to do with the cluster readings including the tach??   I know when my '02 fuel guage would fluctuate from full to empty and everthing in between they replaced the complete cluster.

Just thinking out load here.  :stupid

The older GM diesels tach ran off of the alternator some how, but I'm not too sure how they drive them on the newer ones. I have a call out to see if I can find any more info for you.....

According to your discription, they are telling me that it sounds like a bad cluster. It seems to be a common problem. They said that a rebuilt cluster should be around $325.

Yep, found that out with my Dads 93 6.5, long story short a larger alt pully really focks up your tach.

I have been told that the autometer tach for diesel applications is not as accurate as it should be. I really dont know I have never used one on a diesel. The same guy told me that the pickup the tach used also quit working more than once. I called a place here in Tucson yesterday and the place CE recommended and they both said they can fix it, I am going to go that route this time.

Well the tach don't know what it's on, it has to be the electronics that it's connected to not giving a good signal!.. :stupid

probably the cluster there about $295.00 maybe able to do better than that, but you will need a dealer with a tech 2 to
diagnose it cause it's all controlled by the pcm.

Have I passed you on the river?
