I just bought a 99 Burb 5.7l it's a Cal truck and it runs good but it has the Cal smog crap on it. I am assuming that the smog equip will rob hp and maybe mpg. Can I take it off? Does it matter? What do you guys got?

The reason I pick up on it was the equip in the 2nd batt. box. On Az. trucks just a spot to put a 2nd batt. but this one has crap there that connects to the air intake. Then I got the Car Fax and it was fm Cali.

what hp does an Az truck have and what hp does a Ca truck have? if you remove it the computer will just try to correct what you have undone. |
Yea, I hear what you are saying I always think of the smog crap as more points of failure and power robbing.

You might want to know about C.A.R.B. (Calif. Air Resourses Board) who has mandated a $10,000.00 fine for each device tampered with. So if you remove the smog pump, disable the egr and replace the cat converter with straight pipe, you have a potential of $30,000.00 in fines. How do they enforce this you ask... Calif requires smog certifications at time of registration. The computerized smog check machines are connected directly to Sacramento and receive information directly from your vehicle. Any missing device info will be recorded and forwarded to the proper agency (gestapo) Hopefully the tech will spot these problems before he hooks you up. If you make any changes, don't throw away the old parts, you may need to put them back in order to sell the vehicle.

All fun aside, all you'd do by removing smog gear on that Burb is rob power not make it. The computer is set up to read and interpret info from the M.A.F., O2 sensor, etc. and monkeying around by taking off things you don't need will affect the trans shift points, fuel distribution and timing.
What will help is get a performance cat-back exhaust system, K&N air filter and have the computer chip custom burned from a dyno tune.
Another thing you can look at is adding a supercharger, but that's about $3,000 to $6,000 depending on doing your own work and you'd still need a chip and dyno.
Plus one more item that's pretty cool and works is a "Gear Venders" overdrive unit that bolts up to the trans. If your trans is a 4 speed auto or manual, it becomes an 8 speed.

It's plain and simple you cannot remove any equipment that came from the factory, and if it's computerized all you're doing is looking for a headache by removing it and you won't gain any more power!. I had an 86 Dually(non computerized of course)and it had two smog pumps what a crok and they told me that I couldn't even remove one of them!. Now I did take them off to try it and with a little tuning I did gain some power and a bit better mileage also ran cooler, come smog time I put the garbage back on non funtional and it passed no problem, what a rip!..

I just put one in my dually and it is really cool and it makes a big difference on gas mileage let me tell ya. Before from my house to Parker I would have to switch tanks about 10-15 miles out of town, with the overdrive driving the same speed, same weather conditions, I made it on just barely over a half a tank. I had a 750 on it at the time, I put my 650 back on should get even better mileage!..

Didn't know Az. had got so bad
I agree the newer the car the more integrated into the system the smog crap is. near impossible to remove. |
Well my dually is a 73, and back then any 1 ton and up was exempt from smog equipment and tests, but yet I have to get it smogged, and here they still go back to 66, what a rip!.
With todays computerized shit, everything is tied in and without one part it screws up the computer and the thing won't run!..

Well, you could always use a carb from a Clark forklift if you really wanted to save on gas.
The downside is it's take two weeks to get home.
Seriously, a friend of mine did just that on a Chevy Vega back in the '70s because he had a daily commute from San Diego to L.A. . No power on the hills, but he did get over 55. mpg.
