Just went up to get a tire repaired. Picked up a nail. When done repairing, I told the guy to but 34 lbs in. He did then came over and asked why I ran them so low. I'm  :stupid  my head saying I'm +2 lbs. Oh no I'm not. I'm 10 lbs under. Damn tires say 44 lbs on them. When I bought them last March they had 32 in them, I double checked. Noticed right away, I lost 4 mpg and 6 mpg on Havi trips. Roughly 25% decrease in mpg. So in hindsight they put 32 in to start with. I've wasted a big bunch of money with all my Havi trips alone. Rant over, now go check your tire pressures.

Tire pressure is very important and most people don't even think about it!. Pressures marked on the tire is for it's weight rating only, the ideal pressure is when you have full even contact across the tread, ones on the dually calls for 80 max and it's perfect on the front, any lower and I can feel the difference in handling, the back ones anything more than 55 empty and I'm not getting full contact, with the camper and towing the boat 80 gives a full contact!...

I recently checked my wife's, daughter's and my vehicle's tire pressure and found that I've been running them all a bit on the high side......probably trying to save some gas I guess.

I put them all back to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure and found that they all have been driving much better.

This was all done first thing in the morning when the tires were cold - like it's supposed to be. I'm thinking of getting the girls those pressure specific valve caps so they will know when the pressure is off.  ;)

This is kinda freakin me out. The tire place pressured mine up to 40 PSI. After listening to ya'll I wonder if that's not way too low. They are awfully noisy....gonna have to bust out the reading glasses and check what the sidewall says.  :stupid

I agree with GFR, even wear across the tread will determine proper inflation for normal use.  Mark the tires with chalk and drive a straight line to see if it wears off evenly or the outsides or center wear first, adjust accordingly.  This gives the best overall handling, mpg, wear and ride comfort combined.
Also, I have heard of the 4lb rule.  If after filling the tires and driving till they reach temperature the pressure increases by 4lbs, then you are at proper psi.  If over 4lbs then not filled enough, if under 4lb, lower the nominal at cold setting.

Excellent thread!

Just drove a load up to Pinetop with 70 in the fronts and 75 in the rears......Got 18.7 MPG in the 6.6 duramax @ 55...

Drove back down empty (relatively speaking) with 75 PSI all around @ 55 most all of the way and got 25.6 MPG....

Not too bad for a 7K pound 4WD truck with 265 tires.....

:good
