Kenwood DNX891HD
Kenwood Upgrade
ok, I just did a minor upgrade. This  head unit, and some Alpine direct replacement speakers in a 2006 Crew Cab Silverado.
This receiver seems to have a ton of settings, 13 band EQ, Timing settings, bass boost, sound expander. Â
Generally a bunch of stuff I know little to nothing about, I did the install, and everything works well, steering wheel controls, backup cam,
The Question is If I can't set this up to get the best sound from it, who do I take it to for tuning, and what questions do I ask to know if the guy knows what he is talking about??
I know it's a long ass question, but I have all day.
Â

Seems like a nice unit, could be wrong speakers or needs an amp or just adjustments??, the support page has some good stuff there too. Friend of mine put a high dollar system in a 78 Suburban(totally re done better than new) once and sounded like crap compared to the same system he heard in another vehicle, so he took the truck to one of those sound shops that deal with all these guys that do sound competitions(you know, the ones that has sound systems worth 10 times what the car is worth )they put a meter inside and cranked it up took less than 5 minutes and they told him what the problem was, he didn't like what he heard but they were right so he did what they told him to do and he a bada$$ system in a bada$$ truck.

Thanks Guys,
The sound is good, and it has a ton of options, Hell I can stream Nexflix into the rig, a far cry from the DVD/VCR setups I've had in older rigs. I guess my fear is I am leaving quality sound out because I don't know how to tune it.
I've never had a setup with so many functions.
I have a local guy I see reasonably nice cars in all the time, I'll talk to him.
Oh and I have a 15 year old, he played with it, but has no clue.
Overall Sound is much better that factory, and features are almost overwhelming, and the nav. is nice since this year dibn't offer it. I like the the truck, '06 is a good year, I plan on keeping it awhile. so this was a good upgrade.
I just didn't want to find out a year from now I had it setup like crap...

Damm Asians...
I've got a JVC Double Din in my F150 and all I listen to is AM anyway...
Do wish I had a rear camera though...

Best feature that I use is the external USB...mine supports 16g and yours has 2 ports !!
A DVD data disc is 4g...my better half has all her fave Eagles mp3's (7 albums) on one usb stick. You can also put mpeg videos on one...I convert mine to VCD to fit the screen size...no compromise on audio quality...
That's a great unit you purchased...!!!

I let my 15yr. old play with it, And it took me all day to fix it, every time he was anywhere close to the truck it would link to his phone and start playing his music, he thought is was funny as hell. It connects wirelessly, and will connect thru the cable adapters, Â I got all the adapters for redundant steering wheel controls, and to be able to connect to the wife's Apple products and my android, Â
I have a 1TB HD full of music I've collected over the years, I use my phone as a storage device, with a huge SD card. migrating stuff on and off the phone. So phone integration is really nice.
Just still working thru the settings, I am learning that every input has it's own unique settings. Â So when you swap you need to set up all the sound and EQ settings for each input. I ended up printing the owners manual in 8.5x11 color and putting them in a 3 ring binder, then tabbing stuff I have needed. it's under the front seat of the truck.
Have I really become that bad????? Â
Like I said, The upgrade beats the hell out of a new truck payment...

I think I found the problem. You didn't mention if it had a sink and a foot warmer.
Thats a nice unit you have there, but way out of my price range. What did you do for speakers? Amp?? Just curius.
I have been looking real hard at the Kenwood KDX-798 for my Taco. Speakers Looking at KFC-P709PS for the front doors and KFC-x173 for the rear doors. Kicker has a 6x9 component setup I Might look harder at for the front doors. I don't want to do an amp if possible. Just looking at upgrading the factory setup.

Ha Ha, There was a budget, I saved my lunch money about a year before doing it, I did Alpine SPS-610's 6 1/2" all around, and no amp, I think an amp would help, and I can add one, but it was not a requirement.
I did the install, it was straight forward, there was a bunch of ad on modules, steering wheel adapter, an Apple adapter, but the thought was do it now, or it would not get done.
The factory radio left something to be desired, and one of the speakers had gone south. that's what started the ball rolling, I drove it for a year with a rattling drivers door speaker.

Way out of mine too, but I figure by the time I get the truck done I should have enough put away for it, but then again by then it'll probably be obsolete, oh well..
That KDX-798 seems like a nice unit, decent price too..

the KDX-798 looks like a great setup, What year Taco? Single din?
20w per channel seems like the standard output, if you want more, it's into an amp.
dual usb's with an output on the face is nice, I have a similar unit in my 4runner, it is nice. |
It's an '07 Sport double cab 2wd TRD. Right now it has the factory radio with the 6 disc changer. I'm going to go with the single din in it due to the double dins I like are out of my wallet range.

Good Question. Haven't thought about that. Also not sure that will work or not or what year they started doing the larger faced radios. Might have to do some research on that one to see if it's worth it or not.
