Bit the bullet and ordered from Crutchfield a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X798 deck, For speakers, Rockford Fosgate Prime R1675-S for the front doors, Rockford Fosgate Prime R1675X2 for the rears. Being from Crutchfield I'm getting all the mounts, Brackets and harness' to install this pile in the Taco. Also got the adapter for the factory steering wheel controls. Should be here today. I hope to get it all installed over the next few days. The 8 year old speakers are sounding pretty bad and driving me nuts not having the same features as the radio I had put in the cheby.

I hope it is. Been looking at this stuff for 2 months. Started on it last night. Have the radio out and the new one in the new bracket before it got dark, I got hungry and it started to get chilly out. Not mounted in the dash yet. I got all the wiring adapters so I spent the evening reading and going over what I need to do. Will be busting out the soldering iron and start making connections hopefully tonight. Need to stop somewhere and pick up some heat shrink to cover the connections. Once the radio is in and working then I will start in on the speakers.

I hear ya. I had a Kenwood put in the cheby 4 years ago and like it. Of course they don't have that model any more. This one for the taco is real similar with more features. I did get the radio in last night. So far I'm digging it. Can't wait to get the speakers in. The factory ones are SHOT!!! They are not liking the new radio/power. Played with the bluetooth sending music. That there is some cool sh!t.

Haven't played with the bluetooth yet guess I'm gonna have to give that a shot one of these days Something I hate about electronics is when you finally find what you want, seems like 30 days later it's outdated and something better comes out, when I buy something I try not to look at anything for quite a while because I know I'll be pi$$ed..

Yea I hear ya. Seems like every 3 months someone is coming out with SOMETHING new.
I got the doors apart. I really don't know how any decent sound came out of these factory speakers. All 4 don't weigh as much as one of the ones I'm putting in. Going to have to make minor modifications to the mounting rings that came with the mount kit for the speakers. I'm also gong to need to make mounts for the tweeters. I knew that was going to be the case when I was researching this kind of setup. Tonight I'm going to focus on the tweeter mounts. The rest shouldn't be to time consuming. After I got the doors apart, I should have been taking pictures. I'll try to take some as I'm getting the tweeter mounts done and the mods to the speaker mounts.

Got the rear doors put back together last night. Did a quick sound check to make sure both speakers were working. Got a pattern made and holes drilled for the tweeter mount. Fit checked to the door mount and so far so good. Had to go and get a hole saw to punch holes for the tweeters them self's in the mount. I'll cut tho holes tonight and get the tweeters fit. Once holes and tweeters are a fit then I can finish shaping the mounts. Didn't want to shape them up until holes were a fit so I would have something to hold on to. I still have to make the minor mods to the front speakers to fit in their mounts. Now that I know what needs to be done, that won't take long.
Having only a couple hours each evening to do this is why it's taking so long. I now have to get it done. tonight or at least by noon Saturday. Got things I need to do.

Finished up Saturday morning. Had it all powered on and checking that all the speakers were working Friday night. Shut it down and went in the house as my a$$ was dragging and my brain was mush. I have a few pic's that I need to get off my phone. I'll try to get that done tonight. As I put the door panels back on and cleaned everything up I ran the stereo to let everything work in and to make sure all was actually good. After a couple adjustment with the treble, mid and base settings, this sounds pretty good. Nice and clean. for not having a sub or an amp, This will rock to what I want. Â Â
With the factory tweeters out of the loop in the front doors, Nothing will get to the new setup. So I clipped the wiring off the old tweeters and found the splice that goes to the woofer. Caped the splice so it doesn't short and plugged it back into the factory plug on wiring harness. The new tweeters come off the main speaker where the factory it goes to the tweeter then to the main speaker This way I'm not hacking up the main harness in the door. Cha Ching!! We have sound. Â hopefully that makes sense. Â
Road trip this weekend we will be able to check out other features in tunage connections and see how they work.

Yea it took me a few days. But I also only worked on it a couple hours each evening. You are right, by doing it myself I know what I have and how it's in the truck. I did save a little cash by doing it myself and I know how it's mounted. Would I do it again? He!! Yea!! It's so much easier these days then in the old days were you would have to be a contortionist standing on your head just to mount the radio. They have adapters to hook everything up, and to mount everything and no hacking or running wires.

Been having issues with my phone. The replacement one after I dropped the original, has been a POS. Been having issues getting a few pictures off of it. Once I get it resolved I will get the pic's up that I did take of this project.
One Month Update: System is sounding awsome now that I have figured out the operation and made adjustments. I'm tossing the idea of putting the same speakers in the cheby. I had a kenwood put in it 4 years ago so I'm hope full it will sound close to as good as the Taco does. Playing tunes off the phone with the blue tooth connections is pretty slick out there around desert center. Only thing I haven't played with is to make or take a phone call via the radio. Now for the real kicker. nosing around Crutchfield the other day, I found the radio I just put in the Taco now has been discontinued. Got to love technology.

Now!! You ask yourself. Self?? What did he use to make that tweeter mount? Â
I used a piece of 1/8th inch Plexiglas that I had laying around. I figured that I didn't need anything to technical to mount the tweeters. To buy the mounts I still would have had to made adjustment to the tweeter hole to mount it since there are no 2 tweeter diameter the same. On top of that they would have cost at least $15 for the pair for decent mounts
The last couple days I have developed a minor rattle at a certain tone in the rear passenger door speaker. So when I get a few I need to pull the door panel off and check that out.

I ended up having to replace the front speakers. The tweeters developed a rattle. Now that I have run this setup for a few weeks I have tuned it all in to my taste. There are tunes that would have you thinking there is a sub in the truck. There is not. There is MOORE than plenty base!!! Also I have learned that these speakers like wattage/volume. At low volume they sound good , but you can tell they are not happy. All in all I'm super happy with this setup.
(who knows. Maybe I will install a small sub )
OH, and I have yet to look into the minor rattle in the rear doors.
