Yes, I'm very interested in this. I researched it a little last spring when I was replaced the head unit in my boat. I wanted it for the river. Are you set specifically on XM Radio or have you considered Sirius Radio as well? They seemed too new at the time, so I passed. I am not a rich man, but work in a rich man community and it seems like my truck is the only one around without a satellite radio antenna. I would love for someone who knew about this stuff to come in here and set me straight, cuz I'm still interested. What I vaguely remember was even though they are satellite systems, 100% coverage was not guaranteed at the time. XM had more coverage than Sirius at the time. XM was about $10 a month and Sirius about $13. Many head units are already set up for one service or the other. Let's here more about this!

I'm wanting a stand alone deck that is transferable from car to boat, car to house, blah blah..... And not wanting to run it thru fm radio either I thought I saw this kind of stuff when it first came out but it seems to have faded away.....

You have source 3 options for receiving XM radio. 1. XM ready headunit with the actual XM receiver and Satellite antenna 2. Non-XM ready headunit coupled to a fm modulator,XM receiver, and Satellite antenna. 3. Non-XM ready cassette headunit coupled to a cassette adaptor/cig. lighter adaptor, XM receiver/display, and portable Satellite antenna.
Currently, these are the only 3 methods to satellite radio.
This year a new "portable" unit was introduced. Delphi XM receiver. Nice transportable unit.... Receiver is an SA10000..Includes receiver and remote. retails around 130.00 Cassette adaptor kit model SA10002...Magnetic mount antenna, Vehicle cradle, and cassette and cig lighter adaptors..retails for around 70.00 FM modulator model SA10003...Fm modulator/ harness..retails for 50.00 Home adaptor model SA10004...Includes indoor/outdoor antenna, A/C power adaptor, and home cradle/stand. retails for around 70.00.
Because the FM mod plugs directly into your FM antenna plug at the headunit, the signal is only as good as the actual tuner in your stereo.
I think it's a best value over any other universal portable satellite unit.
Hope this helps, ROz
You'd be surprised about how well the FM mod units sound. I have all Alpine XM/ RF mod.stuff run into my factory 4Runner stereo(Fujitsu(Eclipse)), and it sounds pretty darn good...

I got a Sirius last summer- I couldn't do without it now, anywhere in Havasu through the Gorge to Needles, perfect reception, best of all the songs are not "censored" you get to hear it like you were meant to....from Heavy Metal to Oprea ya got it all> At the time I got mine (last summer) I was told Sirius had double the coverage that XM had. That may or may not be ture... XM was a little less $ but that is actually the reason I went with Sirius- One of the 2 is bound to have $ trouble, I don't want to be stuck with obselete gear in the boat....never did like changing all the CD's. I used a car not a boat antenna because it was much better looking. It's a kenwood- I saw it on a BMW and told the guy to put that on the boat, it rains on cars, so I thought it would be fine on my boat....When I get my boat back from the shop I'll send ya a pic of where I mounted the antenna-
It rocks- good luck

Actually the coverage is about the same. XM has more repeaters, but Sirrus' satellite angle is not as steep so less repeaters are required. Sirrus has less inner format commercials. Both have more than enough music to keep your ears happy while woopin' up a good time
Post some pics when you get your boat back. I'm sure others would like to check it out.

Quote (Havasu Doug @ Mar. 25 2003,12:44 pm) | Sweet! Â Â I put car stuff in my boat all the time just as long as it's not a safety issue. Â Car stereo, CB radio, etc.
Is that your daughter in the driver's seat? Â I have a 7 year old daughter who grew up on my boat. Â |
Yes thats Amanda, she will be 5 in May, her sister is 7 and was there too. I believe between college and weddings I'll be in the poorhouse, so I better have my fun now.........
I really think the horn you have would come in nicely for the idiot waverunners that like to turn right while looking to the left- at least they would know something is there.
Good thing for us guys that girls like boats!!!!!!!!

Brad, Doug, I have daughters that live with their mom, We should schedule a trip for the kids. Doug bring yours along on the weekend you have her. Mine are 13, 10,7 all girls. It would be great to have other boaters along and have a big party for the kids. ( Just think 6 girls and 3 Dudes )

I wouldn't mind being the last man on Earth - just to see if all of those girls were telling me the truth.

My daughter is in year around school. During her time in school, I have her the 1st, 2nd, and 4th weekends of the calender month. During her off track time, which is 3 separate 1 month vacations, I have her for the entire 1st, 2nd, and 4th weeks. Since I have her for the majority of time while she's not in school, she'll be going on the boat quite a bit this year. I already took her to Run What Ya Brung II and she had a good time.
